Grace grinds out win

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. - It was another signature fourth quarter effort that led Grace's women's basketball team to a 69-64 win over Spring Arbor on Wednesday night.

Grace overcame a six-point deficit in the final frame to pick up their 20th win of the season.

This contest was the final of the regular season for the Lady Lancers, as they now turn their attention towards the Crossroads League tournament.

Grace secured the No. 3 seed in the conference tournament and will host No. 6 Taylor on Tuesday at 7 p.m. The winner will advance to the semifinal round and face the winner of No. 2 Marian and No. 7 Mt. Vernon.

Kaylee Patton got the game started with a trifecta, but by the midpoint of the quarter, SAU held a 9-7 lead.

Peyton Murphy recaptured the lead for the Lady Lancers and Grace ended the half on a mini scoring run to take a 20-13 lead into the second quarter.

After extending their lead to 10-points, Grace's offense went cold, hitting on just 25 percent of their tries in the second quarter.

The Cougars took advantage of the Lady Lancers' drought and built up a 33-29 lead by the halftime intermission.

Maddie Ryman led all players with 9 points in the first half.

Grace was forced to play catch up the entirety of the third quarter.

An early Cougars' score put the Lady Lancers in a six-point hole, but baskets from Kiersten Findley and Patton helped steady Grace's offense.

The Lady Lancers got within two-points on four occasions, but each time SAU converted on the other end and took a 47-43 lead into the fourth quarter.

Murphy gave Grace momentum to start the final frame with a 3-point shot on the Lady Lancers first possession. Findley nudged Grace back into the lead with a two-point jump shot.

The Lady Lancers continued to roll and built up a six-point lead with 5:42 left.

SAU refused to go away quietly and scored nine-straight points to jump back into the lead with under three minutes remaining.

Grace was able to take advantage of a baseline inbounds play that allowed Karlee Feldman to pull Grace back even with an old-fashioned 3-point play.

The Lady Lancers recaptured the lead for what would prove to be the final time when Patton made a patient drive and finished with a layup in the paint.

The Cougars drew within one-point at the charity stripe and Grace fell short on their next possession which gave SAU the ball with under a minute until the final buzzer.

The Cougars were denied their chance with the ball as Murphy proved her defensive worth. The sophomore guard stole the SAU pass and raced the length of the floor for an easy layup.

Up three points, Feldman would seal the game for Grace as she blocked a shot in the paint.

Findley put the finishing touches on the victory with a trip to charity stripe as Grace claimed the 69-64 victory.

"So proud of this group of ladies," said Grace head coach Dan Davis. "After a tough loss, they responded so well in practice, and then to come up here and play a really good team continues to show the resiliency that they have. We're going to take a couple of days to appreciate the fact that we have done some things that have never been done here before and then get ready for some postseason ball."

Findley double-doubled with 20 points and 13 rebounds. Feldman followed close behind with 14 points, 9 rebounds and 3 blocks.

Patton and Ryman also topped double-digits with 14 and 13 points respectively.

This proved to be one of Grace's most successful regular season campaigns in program history. The Lady Lancers set new records for longest win streak, most regular season wins, and most conference wins. It also marked their first appearance in the NAIA Top 25 Coaches' Poll since transitioning to division I.
