WINONA LAKE, Ind. - Grace's baseball team came up empty to conclude its series against Taylor on Thursday.
The Trojans, who are receiving votes in the NAIA Top 25 Coaches' Poll, defeated the Lancers 27-5 and 13-0.
After one inning the score was tied 4-4. Grace (9-10) matched Taylor's offensive output in the first with a bases loaded single from
Josh Cosme and a two-RBI double from
John Joyce to level the score.
Taylor broke the deadlock for good in the second, tacking on three runs. They would go on to score at least one run in four of the final five innings to take the decisive victory.
Grace added a run in the fifth on a homerun from
Grant Hartley. The Lancers were muted to eight hits offensively across the seven innings.
Three Grace hitters recorded multi-hit games.
Maximo De Leon batted 2 for 4 with a pair of singles. Cosme added 2 RBIs on two hits, and Joyce connected for 2 hits and 2 RBIs.
In the second game, Grace was quiet at the plate again. The Lancers were held to five hits in the shutout.
When Grace did have runners on, they wreaked havoc on the basepaths with five stolen bases in the game.
Maximo De Leon swiped two bases to bring his season total to 15 on the year.
Grace's pitchers combined to strike out 11 hitters.
Elijah Bruns totaled five over 3.1 innings, and
Caleb Davis fanned six over the final three innings.
Sean Gannon reached base with two singles, and
Austin Carr recorded two walks.
Gavin Kelley went 1 for 2 with a single and a stolen base.
The Lancers will head to Ohio for two games against Mount Vernon on March 20. First pitch against the Cougars is scheduled for 1 p.m.
