WINONA LAKE, Ind. - Grace's baseball team concluded its four-game series with Huntington on Friday afternoon at Miller Athletic Complex.
After earning a split in the opening doubleheader of the series on Thursday, the Lancers (16-18, 8-16 CL) came up short in the series finale, falling 22-5 and 13-1.
Grace jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Maximo De Leon and
Jeff Pawlik got the inning started with back-to-back singles. The leadoff hitter scored on
Austin Carr's RBI groundout, and Pawlik scored on the
Sean Gannon single.
The lead was short lived as Huntington (27-11, 20-6 CL) surged ahead and seized control of the game with an 11-run second inning barrage.
The Lancers scored three runs following the big inning to get within six, but that was as close as they would get as the Foresters extended the lead an inning later. Grace was held scoreless the rest of the way with a 22-5 final score.
Three Grace hitters recorded multi-hit games in the opener. De Leon led the way with a 2 for 3 game, adding 2 RBIs, 2 runs and a walk.
Sean Gannon and
Mason Meyer each clubbed hits to go with an RBI for each.
Game two was a low scoring affair early as the score read 1-0 in favor of the Foresters through three innings. Grace ran into some trouble as the visitors plated five runs to break open the game in the fourth inning.
Sam Newkirk smacked a triple that landed just under the glove of the diving right fielder in the fourth. Grace was unable to bring him home as the Foresters got the final two outs of the inning.
In the fifth inning, Grace was able to claw back a run.
Mason Meyer reached safely on a single and later scored on a Pawlik double to left. That is the only run Grace was able to produce in the game. The Foresters did their damage with two crooked innings, scoring 11 runs over those two frames to claim victory 13-1.
Newkirk went 2 for 3 and four others each recorded a hit with the lone RBI coming from Meyer.
The Lancers will be on the road for two weeks with four doubleheaders scheduled before returning home for the final home stand of the year. The first game of the road trip will be against Goshen on April 17 at 1 p.m.
Grace will host a groundbreaking ceremony on April 20, at 4:45 p.m. to commemorate the upcoming renovation of the baseball diamond and naming of the field, which will become Tom Roy – UPI Park.
