SPRING ARBOR, Mich. - Grace College's softball had a flare for the dramatic in their series-closing win over Spring Arbor on Friday night.
Entering the six inning down by two, the Lancers (7-22, 6-18 Crossroads League) rattled off four-unanswered runs in the final two innings to pull off the upset over the Cougars.Â
Grace and Spring Arbor (24-8, 15-7 CL) even split the four-game season series, with each squad winning two games.
The Lancers earned the first run of the afternoon in the first inning of game number one.
Jeri Ellis reached base with a single to right field and would move herself to third base after a pair of wild pitches. She came in to score to give Grace the lead when
Tia O'Connor singled her home.
After having their offense quickly sent down in the bottom of the first inning, Spring Arbor swung the game in their favor.
The Cougars tied the game in the second inning and added five more runs across the third and fourth innings.
Taylor Hodgen and Ellis helped pull Grace back within four runs in the fifth, but Spring Arbor's scoring spree continued as they tallied three more markers in the bottom of half of the fifth.
The Lancers were unable to sustain a late push to close the gap and dropped game one 9-2.
Ellis was a perfect 2-2 from the plate along with an RBI in the first game.
Alexis Bergman pitched a perfect inning and a third in relief.
Game two appeared to have all the makings of a pitcher's duel in the opening innings. The teams combined for just two hits through the first two and a half innings.
An error in the third inning by Grace's defense allowed the Cougars the opening they needed to push across the game's first score. A trio of singles in the fourth helped Spring Arbor double their lead.
Grace's offense was continually shut down by an impressive performance from the Cougars pitcher, but in the sixth inning the Lancers finally broke through.
After entering the game in a pinch hit position,
Annie Spicer made the move pay immediate dividends with a double towards centerfield. Hodgen followed up Spicer's double with a single of her own to give Grace runners on the corners.
A sacrifice fly from Ellis pulled Grace within a run and an RBI double from O'Connor tied the game at two apiece.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Ellis would continue the Lancers' momentum on the defensive side of things, as she sent the Cougars down in order.

Carly Ruiz and
Abbie Rymers loaded the bases for Grace in the top of the seventh as the Lancers searched for the go-ahead score.
The go-head and insurance RBIs would come courtesy of Ellis as her two-RBI single gave Grace their first lead of the afternoon.
Grace's defense shutdown the Cougars in the bottom of the seventh to secure the 4-2 victory.
Along with picking up the victory in the circle for Grace, Ellis added three RBIs to bring her total for the afternoon to four.
The Lancers will quickly turn their attention towards Bethel, as the welcome Pilots to Coach Phil Dick Field on Saturday at 1 p.m.
