Grace tripped up by Bearcats

WINONA LAKE, Ind. - Grace's women's soccer team suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Brescia on Thursday.

The score was stunning considering Grace's dominance of the match. The No. 16 Lancers outshot Brescia 24-3.

But the Bearcats used one goal in the 75th minute, coupled with stout goalkeeping, to shock the Lancers at 1st Source Bank Field.

Grace also racked up 14 corner kicks (compared to zero for Brescia), adding to the frustrating offensive night for the young Grace squad.

The Lancers started eight freshmen in the match with four additional first-year players getting time off the bench.

Grace had no shortage of chances to score in either half. Rylee Burns, Rosalie Gefrorer and Feline Abbo tried shots in the opening six minutes.

In the middle portions of the half, Grace generated several golden chances.

Gefrorer tried two more shots in quick succession, and Sam Vondersaar also had a close-range shot in the penalty box. But each time, Brescia shut the door on Grace's attempts.

Gefrorer and Abbo combined for eight shots before halftime, leading Grace's attack. The Lancers went into halftime in a scoreless draw despite an 11-0 edge in shot attempts.

While Grace was far from nonchalant in the first half, the Lancers had even greater offensive intensity to begin the second half.

Grace put nine shots at Brescia's goal in the first 20 minutes of the second half, five of which were on target. Shannon Farnsworth, Abbo, Rylee Burns and Gefrorer were each denied the go-ahead moment in attack.

With 16 minutes left in the match, Brescia tried its first shot of the evening. One minute later, the Bearcats scored.

Brescia strung together a few passes in the middle of the field then set loose a shot from well outside the box that tucked under the crossbar.

The Lancers tried three more shots along with a corner kick over the remaining minutes, but Grace was unable to generate the equalizing goal.

The Lancers will not need to wait for a chance to rebound. Grace will host Carolina on Saturday at 7 p.m. in another home outing at 1st Source Bank Field.
