Grace wins again, off to best start in nine years

MISHAWAKA, Ind. - Grace's volleyball team wrapped up a perfect weekend at the Bethel Invitational on Saturday.

The Lancers improved to 6-1 with a four-set victory against IU South Bend; Grace finished the tournament with three wins in three matches.

Grace is enjoying its best start to a season since 2014. The squad's only loss so far is to current No. 4-ranked Viterbo.

On Saturday, the Lancers excelled in most facets of the match. Grace's offense racked up 50 kills on a .230 percentage.

Defensively, IU South Bend was muted to 37 kills at a .085 percentage. Grace also amassed 15 block points and served up 10 aces.

The opening set saw the Titans pull away midway through; the score was level at 11s, but the Titans quickly surged ahead by five. Grace did its best to rally late, scoring five straight points with kills from Livia Tate and Katie Swanson.

But the Titans recovered, ending the set with three points to win 25-21.

Grace found swift revenge in the second set. The Lancers rolled to an 11-point win. In the set, Grace erupted for 15 kills on a .324 percentage.

The third set started sharply for Grace as well with the team winning the first three points, including two blocks from Tate.

The Titans managed to tie the score and kept pressure on the Lancers. But late kills from Sahara Bee, Cassadi Colbert, Alisha Leffring and Katie Swanson handed Grace a 25-21 victory.

Grace exploded in the fourth set with a commanding 9-2 lead.

The Lancers maintained their assault, later tallying six straight points with a pair of aces from Emma Blackford. Grace ended the match with a dominant 25-11 win.

Jadyn Ross notched a double-double with 10 kills and 10 assists, adding 2 solo blocks and 2 block assists.

Tate wrapped up her impressive weekend defensively with four solo blocks and four block assists; she also added five kills in attack.

Swanson finished with a match-best 11 kills on a .429 percentage, adding two solo blocks and two block assists.

Bee finished with nine kills on a .350 percentage, and Colbert added seven kills.

Morgan Syoen finished with 23 assists and 11 digs, and Riley Owens had 19 assists, 4 digs, 3 aces and 2 kills.

Liz Schmidt notched a team-high 14 digs, and Blackford served up five aces.

Next up, the Lancers will play at home for the first time this season. Grace will kick off Crossroads League play on Wednesday with a 7 p.m. match versus Goshen.
