Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Pair of early markers leads Lancers past Trojans

WINONA LAKE, Ind. - Grace College's men's soccer team used a pair of early goals to lead them to a 3-1 victory over Taylor on Wednesday night.

The fourth ranked Lancers (8-2, 2-0 Crossroads League) netted two goals, including the eventual game winner, within the first 10 minutes of action. Grace's scores were separated by just 2:01 minutes of the play.

Grace's first goal came courtesy of Juan Garcia who scored on a 20-yard free kick opportunity. Before the Trojans (3-6-1, 0-1-1 CL) could catch their breath the Lancers scored again.

Blake Burns and Dan Allen tactfully played the ball around the box before lofting a pass to Joa Sousa who trapped the ball and slotted it past the keeper to put Grace ahead 2-0.

After Grace's second goal, the pace of play slowed significantly as the game divulged into a midfield battle.

After trailing by two goals for the majority of the half, the Trojans would draw back within one late in the opening stanza.

Taylor took advantage of a set-piece opportunity and a well placed crossing pass to net their first goal of the match.

Martim Sequeira nearly pushed the Lancers' lead back to two late in the half, but his attempt following a Grace corner was swept off the goal line at the last second by a Trojan defender.

At the half the shot totals were nearly identical, with Grace holding a slim 7-6 advantage.

As the second got underway, the Lancers were the early aggressors. Jonny Mora and Garcia each had chances, but were unable to capitalize and extend Grace's advantage.

Grace avoided disaster minutes later. A seemingly innocent play from along Grace's backline turned into a dangerous chance for the Trojans after a Taylor player hustled back deflected a Grace pass towards goal. Matteo Conci was alert in goal and grabbed the bouncing ball to thwart the Trojan threat.

The Lancers' offense continued to pressure as Josh Cruz had a pair of point blank shots, but again the Trojan defense held strong.

With under 17:20 left in the game Grace struck again to leave little doubt in the game's conclusion.

Sequeira and Frederik Christmann played a give-and-go pass that left a blitzing Sequeira with just the keeper between him and goal. Sequeira finished the play with a well placed ball that sliced past the keeper for Squeira's eighth goal of the season.

With the game now well in hand for Grace, the rest of the game passed without incident as the Lancers held on for the 3-1 win to improve their win streak to six games.

At the final whistle, Grace held a commanding 18-10 shot advantage. Garcia led all players with five shots and Sequeira followed close behind with four of his own. Conci made five saves in the victory.

Grace's next outing will be on Saturday at 7 p.m. The Lancers travel to Indiana Wesleyan to take on the 20th ranked Wildcats.
