Grace powers past Foresters

WINONA LAKE, Ind. - Grace's volleyball team bounced back from a first-set loss to defeat Huntington 3-1 on Friday night.

The Lancers (14-6, 5-4 Crossroads League) used big performances from Jadyn Ross (13 kills, 20 digs) and Sahara Bee (15 kills) to finish off the Foresters at the Manahan Orthopaedic Capital Center.

The teams could hardly be separated in a tight opening set. The score was tied 15 times in the set with the lead changing hands on seven occasions.

Back-to-back kills from Anna Ballengee and Alisha Leffring put Grace ahead 19-18, but the Foresters responded with three straight points to charge in front.

Another set of kills from Ballengee and Leffring kept Grace within range, but the Foresters managed to hold on for the 25-23 victory.

Despite the loss, Grace still racked up 17 kills in the set, foreshadowing a potent offense that the Lancers had in store for the evening.

Grace began the second set in emphatic fashion, erupting for a 10-1 lead. Grace's cushion blew up to 14-3 before HU showed signs of a fight.

The Foresters rallied midway into the set with seven unanswered points, but two timely kills apiece from Bee and Leffring helped Grace regain its footing.

The Lancers rolled to a 25-16 win to even the match.

Grace again roared out to a big advantage in the third set, claiming a 10-2 lead. The Foresters had to burn both of their timeouts early to slow Grace's momentum.

HU tried to rally late again with four straight points, but the Lancers were not fazed. Cassadi Colbert ended the set with a kill as Grace won 25-21. Bee had five kills on eight swings in the set.

A similar theme emerged in the fourth set; Grace pulled ahead early while the Foresters frantically rallied late.

Grace seized a comfortable 7-2 margin to begin the fourth set, aided by three aces from Emma Blackford.

Two more aces from Morgan Syoen put Grace in charge with a 17-8 lead. The Foresters showed resolve, rattling off a 6-0 spurt to threaten the Lancers.

Huntington rallied all the way back to 24-23, but Leffring put the match to rest with a kill on the final point as Grace won 25-23.

Bee led all players with her 15 kills, hitting at a .351 percentage with just two errors. Ross's team-high 20 digs came with 13 kills (.273 percentage).

Both of Grace's setters had double-doubles as well; Syoen tallied 26 assists, 16 digs and 2 aces, and Riley Owens had 19 assists, 11 digs and 1 ace. Owens was also honored before the match for reaching 1,000 career assists.

Katie Swanson finished with 10 kills, including four in the decisive fourth set. Leffring had eight kills and two block assists, and Livia Tate notched 4 kills, 1 solo block and 3 block assists.

McKenzie Stakely finished with 17 digs, Liz Schmidt dug up 13 balls, and Blackford had four aces and two digs.

The Lancers will head to Goshen on Saturday for a 3 p.m. match.
