GOSHEN, Ind. - Maddie Ryman topped 30 points for the second time this week, leading Grace's women's basketball team to a resounding 63-46 victory at Goshen.
Ryman's season-high 32 points lifted the Lancers (7-8, 2-3 Crossroads League) to the road win.
Grace's defense gave Goshen fits; the Maple Leafs (8-7, 3-2 CL) were held to just 29 points over the final three quarters.
Goshen scored on the first possession of the game, and the Lancers trailed for the rest of the quarter.
Two free throws from Ryman tied the score at 10-10, but Grace went the final 4:44 of the quarter without making a field goal.
The Maple Leafs pulled in front 17-13 thanks to shooting 57 percent on the floor. Although Grace struggled to shoot 31 percent from the floor, the Lancers forced Goshen into eight turnovers to keep the score close.
The Lancers surged ahead in the second quarter. Grace's stifling defense held Goshen to just two points over the first seven minutes of the period.
Offensively, Ryman and Kaylee Patton combined for nine points to push the Lancers ahead 23-19.
Goshen countered to quickly even the score, but a triple from Morganne Houk gave Grace a 27-24 edge as the game reached the midway intermission.
Grace shot only 30 percent from the floor in the first half compared to 46 percent for Goshen.
But Grace's active defense produced 15 turnovers; seven different Lancers recorded a steal in the half, led by two from Bekah Marshall. Ryman and Patton led Grace with nine points apiece.
In the third quarter, Ryman continued to assert her dominance. She racked up 11 points over the first 5:23 of the period, handing Grace its first double-digit lead of the game at 39-29.
As the game entered the final stanza, Grace still held a 46-38 advantage.
Grace prevented any sort of comeback with more lockdown defense in the fourth quarter; Goshen was muted to just eight points, including just two points over the final 6:43 of regulation.
The Lancers led by over 10 points for much of the fourth quarter. Goshen was unable to put a dent in Grace's cushion thanks to the defending of the Lancers.
Goshen was held to 24 percent shooting after the first quarter; they finished 33 percent overall for the game.
Grace won the turnover battle 20 to 8 and also nabbed 11 steals.
Ryman's 32 points came with 5 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals, making 15 of 16 from the free throw line.
Patton finished with 14 points, 4 boards and 2 assists, and Peyton Murphy had 6 points, 4 assists and 2 steals.
Molly Long tacked on four points with three boards, Kate Rulli had 2 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists, and Houk chipped in three points and five rebounds.
The Lancers return home on Wednesday for a doubleheader against Huntington. The women will tip off at 5:30 p.m. at the Manahan Orthopaedic Capital Center.
