FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Grace's volleyball team produced a dominant defensive display, beating St. Francis 3-0 on Wednesday night.
The No. 16 Lancers (19-5, 12-2 Crossroads League) held St. Francis to a .009 hitting percentage as a team to continue its strong conference campaign.
Grace held USF to five kills in the opening set. The Cougars scored the first three points of the match, but the Lancers completely controlled the rest of the set.
Grace rattled off seven straight points to reclaim the lead for good; Grace outscored the Cougars 25-7 after falling behind 3-0, winning the set 25-10 in emphatic fashion.
The Lancers seemed poised to pick up another rout in the second set. Grace jumped out to a 15-7 lead after scoring nine unanswered points. Brea Harris had two quick kills during the spree.
But the Cougars rallied, eventually pulling in front 22-19. Harris notched two more kills to help spark a 4-0 spurt for Grace, but the Cougars still served for the set at 24-23.
Grace had to fend off three set points, using kills from Leah Henderson and Harris as well as a block by Sahara Bee and Livia Tate.
The Lancers ended the set with three straight points, including a kill from Bee on the final rally, as Grace won in extra points (28-26).
USF had little fight left in the third set. Grace quickly grabbed a 7-2 lead. The Cougars managed to pull within three points, but the Lancers secured the sweep thanks to a 25-17 victory.
Alisha Voss paced Grace's offense with 9 kills, 1 solo block and 3 block assists. Harris racked up eight kills with four digs.
Bee tallied six blocks with three block assists, Tate had three kills and three block assists, and Henderson had three kills on four swings.
Liz Schmidt produced 18 digs, Morgan Syoen had 19 assists, 6 digs and 3 aces, Riley Owens passed out 10 assists, and McKenzie Stakely added 13 digs.
The Lancers will remain on the road Saturday for a 1 p.m. clash at Bethel.
