GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The record book for Grace's cross country will undergo a significant revision after the Lancers' performance on Saturday.
Grace raced well at the NAIA Great Lakes Challenge, setting team and individual records against a batch of highly ranked opponents.
The women finished as the runner-up out of 20 teams, and the men finished 11th overall.
Kylie Sauder bettered her own school record with a 5k time of 17:45.0 to place fifth overall.
Esther Cameron was just three seconds behind her with a race of 17:48.5, placing sixth in the field.
Cece Mitchell ran to a 32nd-place finish of 18:37.3, which also cracked Grace's top-10 5k races of all-time.
Caroline Kolb (18:46.5), Morgan Welch (18:49.9) and Addison Grady (18:55.2) kept a tight grouping for Grace's next pack, and Cassandra Cross (19:23.9), Tame Baylis (19:26.0) and Grace Geller (19:32.6) did likewise for Grace's next group.
The women shattered their previous team time record, posting an overall mark of 1:31:47. It was 1 minute, 40 seconds faster than the team's existing team time record.
On the men's side, the team produced the No. 2 fastest time in program history as well. They combined for a time of 2:05:54.
Cole Johnston enjoyed a top-10 finish with his race of 24:26.8, good for sixth out of 202 runners.
Brandon Kleber was ninth overall in a time of 24:32.7. Johnston and Kleber ran the fifth and seventh-fastest 8k races in Grace's men's team history.
Brady Hunsberger was next in line for Grace with a time of 25:30.3, and he was followed in quick succession by Luis Loera (25:37.5), Luke Nier (25:47.7), Justin Van Prooyen (25:57.6) and Austin Wilson (26:01.0).
"We had PRs almost across the board with both teams looking healthy and strong as we look toward postseason racing," said Grace head coach Brian Dewey. "It's such a blessing to watch these runners train so hard and reap the benefits of their work. They've been able to maintain a level of gratefulness to God for the gift He has given them, and that is wonderful to see."
The Lancers have three races remaining. On Nov. 8, Grace will take on the Crossroads League Championships in Upland, Ind., which will be followed by NCCAA Nationals (Nov. 15) and NAIA Nationals (Nov. 22).
