INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Grace's women's tennis took Marian to the brink in league tournament action on Thursday, falling 4-1 to the Knights in the semifinals. The final score wasn't indicative of the flow of the match as five singles matches needed a tiebreaker to decide a winner. Unfortunately for Grace, just enough points went to the home team.
Grace (7-3, 6-2 CL) battled for the doubles point, but the Knights prevailed to get the first point of the day.
Natalie Schoenherr and
Molli Runestad looked to even doubles, but narrowly fell 6-4.
Jimena Ramirez and
Alejandra Sandoval were ahead in their pairing 5-4, before Marian clinched the doubles point.
Singles play was a nailbiter with five courts all coming down to the wire. Marian increased its lead with a win at No. 6 singles and added another in the come-from-behind win on court five.
Ramirez picked up Grace's point from the No. 1 slot. She was ahead early, but had to complete the point in a tiebreaker 6-3, 2-6, 6-4.
The final point of the match came from No. 4 singles.
Lydia Ruegsegger held the advantage after the first set, but was unable to finish off the point in a tiebreaker.
Two matches did not finish, both of which Grace was leading.
Geraldine Salinas clawed back to send it to a tiebreaker and was ahead 5-4.
Alejandra Sandoval came from behind as well to lead 4-3 in the tiebreaking third set.Â
Grace has two matches left in the fall season, both non-conference foes. First will be on the road at Saint Mary's on Oct. 7, followed by the home finale against Judson on Oct. 9.Â
