MISHAWAKA, Ind. - Grace College's men's soccer team dropped its final game of the 2024 season 2-0 at Bethel on Wednesday night.
With the loss the Lancers (7-7-2, 6-3 Crossroads League) finished the season in second place in the conference standing and will host Mt. Vernon in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.
Grace had the first shot in the midweek showdown with the Pilot's (12-4-2, 5-4 CL), but Bethel controlled the pace of play early. The Pilots had five shots and a trio of corner kicks within the first 15-minutes of play.
The Lancers responded with quality chances from
Daniel Santos Rosa and
Kyle Holwerda, but the Bethel keeper saved both shots to hold the game even.
As the game wore on both teams seemed to settle into their defensive formations as chances were limited though the remainder of the half.
At the halftime intermission Bethel held a 9-5 shot advantage and a 6-1 corner kick edge.
Matteo Conci made five saves in the opening 45 minutes.
After playing a scoreless first half, it took Bethel just 4:23 of the second stanza to break the ice.
The Lancers nearly equalized at the midpoint of the half with a pair of consecutive dangerous chances.
Santos Rosa had a shot that was tipped wide of goal and
Juan Garcia  rattled the goalpost with a shot coming off the ensuing corner kick.
With 15 minutes left in the game Grace saw their deficit double as Bethel buried the second goal of the game to take a stranglehold on the contest.
Grace continued to search for goal in waning moments of the game but they were unable to chip away the Pilots' lead, falling 2-0.
The Lancers ended the game being out shot 15-10 and had two less corner kicks. Both teams had 10 fouls but the Pilots were whistled for four yellow cards.
Garcia and
Gavin Morgan each had two shots and Conci made four saves.
