SPRING ARBOR, Mich. - For the second time this season, Grace's women's soccer team took a ranked Spring Arbor squad to the brink of an upset.
But the No. 11 Cougars escaped on Saturday in the semifinals of the Crossroads League Tournament, scoring in overtime to top Grace with a 1-0 victory.
To begin the game, Spring Arbor peppered Grace's goal early by taking the first six shots of the match.
But the final 25 minutes of the half were a possession battle. The teams combined for three shots over the last half of the period, and neither side was able to generate a go-ahead moment.
To begin the second half, SAU did its best to force an early goal. The Cougars piled off seven shots over the first 12 minutes of the second half, but the Lancers' defense held firm.
The rest of the second half saw Grace (13-4-2) seize control. The Lancers allowed just one shot attempt over the final 32 minutes of regulation.
As the half continued, Grace's chances multiplied.
Grace's offense generated back-to-back attempts with 11 minutes to play, but shots from Amy Wearing and Cassidy Felger were saved.
The Lancers pressed late with two more quick shots over the final 10 minutes from Rosalie Gefrorer and Tori Twombly.
SAU also tried a shot in the last five minutes, but neither side could find a dramatic late winner as the match reached overtime.
But despite Grace's momentum, the overtime did not last long. The Cougars scored in the first three minutes, sending a deep shot just beneath the crossbar against the run of play to advance in a golden-goal situation.
Ivy Cline registered four saves in goal for Grace, including the shutout during regulation.
The Lancers will await its postseason fate as a potential at-large invitee to the NAIA National Championships.
Grace owns 13 wins this year and has four losses — all to teams ranked in the top 20 of the NAIA.
The Lancers are ranked No. 31 in the RPI and seventh in the arc rating.
