CHICAGO, Ill. - For the third consecutive game, Grace's men's basketball team topped 100 points in a win.
The Lancers (4-2) finished its Friday night game at St. Xavier in a flurry, topping the Cougars 102-80.
Gage Sefton scored 30, and the Lancers ended the game on a 24-4 run.
Grace handed the Cougars (3-1) their first loss of the season. The Lancers shot a sizzling 66 percent from the floor and 54 percent on 3s.
Sefton was effective early and often for Grace. The sophomore scored six points in the first three minutes.
Ian Raasch also scored four quick points to put Grace ahead early 13-9.
The first half remained close with each team grabbing a small lead throughout the half.
The Cougars held a slight 27-25 edge, but Grace caught fire from deep. Brett Sickafoose drained a pair of 3-pointers in a two-minute span, and Raasch added a triple of his own to help Grace build a seven-point cushion.
The Lancers pushed their lead up to 12 at its largest point and strolled into halftime with a 44-36 advantage.
Sefton was a force, leading all players with 14 first-half points. Ian Scott nearly had a double-double with eight points and 10 boards.
Grace shot the ball well in the half, making 53 percent of its attempts and 50 percent on 3s. They also won the rebounding battle 25-10, helping recover from losing the turnover battle 8-2.
Scott helped Grace continue its strong play with a dunk, 3-pointer and layup in less than two minutes.
The Lancers pushed their lead up to 15, but the Cougars were prepared for a run. SXU patiently ate away at Grace's lead and eventually pulled within two at 78-76 with 7:15 left in the game.
But Grace's defense went into lockdown mode; the Cougars did not score again for nearly five minutes.
Grace took advantage by going on a 20-0 run. Raasch and Sefton combined for the first 10 points, and Sickafoose scored another seven points during the run to stun the Cougars.
Grace punished SXU's press with several fastbreak buckets, and the Lancers steamrolled to the final buzzer and a 22-point win.
Sefton made 13 of 15 from the floor for his 30 points, adding 7 boards, 3 steals, 2 blocks and 2 steals.
Raasch tallied 20 points, 5 boards and 3 assists, and Scott had 19 points, 11 boards and 6 assists.
Sickafoose drained four 3-pointers for his 18 points, Hunter Walston notched eight points off the bench, and Justin DeGraaf added seven points and four boards.
The Lancers will kick off Crossroads League play next week at home. Grace will host Marian on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m., following the conclusion of the women's game at 5:30 p.m.
