WINONA LAKE, Ind. - Grace College's women's basketball improved to 2-0 on the season with a convincing 30-point victory over Midway on Friday night.
The Lancers (2-0) led wire-to-wire in a dominating 93-63 effort over the previously unbeaten Eagles.
Grace's efforts were led by
Peyton Murphy who had a second-consecutive double double to start the season. The senior standout set her career high with 25 points, while also adding 15 rebounds, 6 steals and 4 assists.
It was all Grace at the start of Friday's game, as the Lancers jumped out to a 6-0 lead. Midway (2-1) finally broke the seal on their basket three minutes in with a pair of free throws.
The Eagles struggled to play clean defense against Grace's physical offensive attack as the Lancers feasted from the charity stripe in the opening quarter. The Lancers shot 11-12 from the free throw line in the first frame including Murphy's 7-8 which propelled her game-leading 11 first quarter points. At the quarter break the Lancers had built a 21-13 lead.
Grace continued to build on their lead in the second quarter with Morgane Houk as the focal point of the offense. Houk scored seven of Grace's first nine points of the second stanza, including a trifecta which pushed the Lancers' lead to double digits.
Murphy also found her touch from beyond the arc and
Kensie Ryman finished an and-1 as the Lancers pushed ahead by 18 points. The Lancers reached 21 after Ryman dished an assist to Bekah Marshal who sank Grace's third 3-point shot of the frame.
Ryman converted on Grace's eight and ninth free throws of the quarter which pushed the lead to 26 points. Midway hit a last second 3-point shot to cut the lead to 51-28 heading into the halftime intermission.
Grace shot 44 percent from the floor in the first half while hitting on 20 of the 21 free throws. Murphy nearly had a double double with 18 points and nine rebounds.
As the second half got under it was Midway who got on the board first. The Eagles scored the first six points of the quarter as they cut the lead down to 17 points.
A 30-second timeout from Grace head coach stalled the momentum and baskets from Houk and
Kate Thomas momentarily got the Lancers' offense back on track.
Midway got hot from the field again going on a 10-0 run which saw Grace's advantage shrink to 12 points.
Momentum swung back in Grace's favor after a shooting and a technical foul went against the Eagles which allowed Grace to have a five-point possession and grow the lead back to 17-points.
Grace entered the fourth and final quarter with a 19-point lead and never looked back over the remaining 10 minutes.
Sophia Morrison and
Kaydence Mellott each connected on shots from range and
Maddy Poynter added five points as the Lancers cruised to the 93-63 win.
Joining Murphy in double digit scoring for Grace was Ryman with 18 points, Marshall with 16 points and Houk with 13 points. Marshall added seven rebounds and Ryman had six assists.
