WINONA LAKE, Ind. - A career performance from Ian Scott guided Grace's men's basketball team past IU East on Friday.
Scott poured in a career-high 35 points as the Lancers (9-3) defeated IU East 93-82.
The senior forward was nearly perfect from the field, shooting 15 of 18 overall, adding eight rebounds and three assists in a dominant performance.
Grace shot the ball well from the field (60 percent) and on 3s (43 percent), which helped overcome a poor free-throw shooting day (52 percent).
Friday was also Elementary Day, which featured several hundred local elementary students in attendance, producing a wild and energetic atmosphere at the Manahan Orthopaedic Capital Center.
The first half was a fast-paced, offensive battle. The teams combined for 87 points as each side shot well over 50 percent.
Scott began his career day by scoring four points inside of the first minute.
The teams exchanged small runs during the middle portions of the half. The Red Wolves fueled their offense largely through long-range shooting. IUE made seven 3-pointers (64 percent) before halftime.
Grace's offense came through its transition (14 fastbreak points) and in the lane (24 paint points).
With eight minutes left in the half, Grace scored 10 straight points to expand its lead from one to 11 (38-27). Justin DeGraaf hit back-to-back triples during the run, and Hunter Walston capped off the spurt with two layups.
The Lancers went scoreless over the last two minutes of the half, but Grace still led 46-41 at halftime.
Grace only turned the ball over four times and shot 59 percent from the field. Scott had 15 points, and DeGraaf added 13 in the half.
Grace did well to get to the free throw line 10 times, but the home team made just four of those attempts.
Six minutes into the second half, Grace's lead sat at nine. But the Red Wolves caught fire from deep to erase the deficit.
IUE made four 3s in a four-minute span, adding three free throws on a fouled 3-point try. The Red Wolves clawed in front 66-63 at the midway mark of the second half.
Carter Stoltzfus and DeGraaf hit timely 3-pointers to keep Grace's offense going. Stoltzfus twice tied the score with a triple.
With 6:19 left in the game, Grace took the lead for good. Ian Raasch made a layup, and Brett Sickafoose swished a triple to hand the Lancers a 76-71 lead.
Scott then closed the game on a flurry. He poured in 12 points over the final 3:25, converting two and-1s and ending the game on a dunk as Grace won by 11.
DeGraaf tallied 16 points on 3-of-3 shooting from beyond the arc, and Raasch notched 12 points, 5 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 assists.
Brycen Graber handed out eight assists, and Stoltzfus had nine points and four assists.
Sickafoose produced eight points, and Walston added six points and five boards.
The Lancers will head to Texas next week for a pair of games against Texas A&M-San Antonio and Nelson on Monday and Tuesday.
Grace's next home game will be Jan. 4 for a conference clash against Goshen.
