Voss reaches milestone as Grace closes out pool play

POINT LOOKOUT, Mo. - Grace College's volleyball team closed out the pool play portion of the NCCAA national tournament on Thursday night.

The Lancers (22-12) dropped their final match of pool play to Jessup 3-0 but still qualified for the semifinals as their pool's runner-up after winning both games on Wednesday.

Grace will take on the top-seeded Rams of Columbia International on Friday (3 pm CT) for a trip to the national championship game.

For the second consecutive game Grace celebrated an individual milestone. On the first point of the game Alisha Voss recorded a kill which was the 1,000th of her career. She joined Riley Owens (2,000 career assists) in eclipse milestones during the NCCAA Tournament.

The Lancers started the first set out strong, jumping out to a 5-2 lead. Voss had a block and a pair of kills to help bolster the early lead.

Livia Tate added a kill but it was Grace's lone point amongst a 5-1 run for the Warriors, which allowed them to capture the lead.

Grace and Jessup traded the lead back and forth over the next few points with neither side able to gain a decisive edge.

The Lancers led 22-21 late in the first set, but the Warriors rallied to take the first set 25-23.

Grace scored the first two points of the second frame but the Warriors quickly took control of the set. The Lancers struggled to find offensive consistency and fell behind by as many 19-10.

Grace found its scoring touch late to pull within striking distance but ultimately fell 25-19.

The third set continued to follow form as the Lancers jumped out to an impressive 7-1 lead.

The Warriors once again showed resolve and slowly chipped away at the deficit and by the midpoint of the set had pulled within a single point. Jessup then rattled off six consecutive points to grab an 18-14 lead.

The Lancers got back to within 21-20, but couldn't maintain pace as Jessup completed the sweep with a 25-22 win.

Voss led all players with 14 points and also had four blocks to match the game high. Liz Schmidt had 16 digs and Riley Owens added 15 assists.
