Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Grace surges in second half for season sweep over Bethel

WINONA LAKE, Ind. - Grace College's women's basketball team used a dominant second half performance to pick up a 84-63 victory over Bethel on Saturday afternoon.

Senior Kaylee Patton helped fuel the Lancers to the season sweep over the Pilots, scoring her 1,000th career points in the second half of Saturday's win. Patton becomes the 23rd player in program history to eclipse the 1,000 point mark.

Grace (13-13, 8-8 Crossroads League) is now tied for fourth place in the Crossroads League with St. Francis. The Lancers will play the Cougars on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. and will clinch a first round home game in the Crossroads League Tournament with a win.

The first quarter between Grace and Bethel (6-20, 1-15 CL) was a back-and-forth affair, featuring seven lead changes in the opening 10 minutes.

At the midpoint of the quarter the Lancers trailed 7-6 until consecutive scores from Morganne Houk and Peyton Murphy pushed the Lancers ahead by three points. It was the largest lead that either team enjoyed in the stanza.

Maddie Ryman fueled the Lancers through the quarter scoring nine of Grace's 17 points. Six of her points came courtesy of the charity stripe.

The Pilots carried a narrow 18-17 lead into the quarter break thanks to a trio of 3-point baskets.

Kate Rulli started the second half with a tenacious effort on the offensive glass and scored the first bucket of the second quarter.

Rulli scored another inside basket and Ryman added a 3-point basket but still no separation could be found between the two teams.

With 5:22 left in the half Houk scored to tie the game at 28 points. The Houk score sparked the Lancers squad who ripped off 11 unanswered points.

Patton and Rulli each had scores during the run and Bekah Marshall capped the 11-0 spurt off with a corner trifecta to put Grace ahead 37-28.

The Pilots managed to cut the lead down three points by the halftime break as Grace carried a 41-38 advantage into the intermission.

The Lancers shot 48 percent from the floor in the first half while the Pilots hit on an impressive 56 percent of their tries. Grace turned the ball over just five times while forcing Bethel into 12 turnovers.

A half opening score for the Pilots cut the lead down to a single point. However Grace's offense had found its rhythm as it began to open up the lead.

Kensie Ryman responded with a 3-point shot to push the lead back to four points and several successful possessions later a Murphy layup saw Grace's lead extend to double digit points.

The Lancers weren't done there though as Rulli, who was in the midst of a career day, muscled her way inside for another score in the paint.

Rulli had an old-fashioned 3-point play and Ryman hit from beyond the arc as Grace's lead continued to balloon.

Rulli scored to put Grace ahead 66-46 late in the quarter and capped off a 23-4 run for the Lancers.

Bethel pulled to within 15 points by the middle portion of the final frame, but Grace dashed any hopes of a comeback with an 11-0 run.

Grace grew the lead to as many as 26 points while nine different players saw playing time. The Lancers' final score came from Lily Moore who helped the game to its final conclusion of a 84-63 result in favor of Grace.

"The ladies played a really good game tonight," commented Grace head coach Dan Davis. "I thought we did a really good job of coming out in the third quarter and really taking control of the game and working the ball into the paint. This is the time of year where we have to be playing up to our potential and this was a good start."

Grace finished the game 53 percent from the floor while Bethel ended at 47 percent. The Lancers forced the Pilots into 21 turnovers which they converted into 23 points. Grace held a decisive advantage on points in the paint (54-28) and rebounds (33-24).

Rulli had a career high 21 points to go along with eight rebounds. Matching that statline was Ryman.

Patton had 14 points including her 1,00th career point. Murphy had a loaded statline with 10 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists.
