Lancers pick up win in home opener

WINONA LAKE, Ind. - Grace's baseball team christened the newly renovated Tom  Roy - UPI Park with a victory in its home-opening doubleheader on Friday afternoon.

The Lancers (6-5) dealt Lawrence Tech (4-1) its first loss of the season, taking game two of the twin bill 6-4.

In the opener, Grace couldn't overcome an eight-run deficit, falling 10-3 to start the day.

Lawrence Tech held a narrow run-run lead through the first three frames. The visitors broke the game open with four runs in consecutive innings, putting the game out of reach.

Trailing 5-0 in the fourth, Grace strung together a couple of hits to manufacture a run. Grant Hartley doubled to deep left to get the inning started and his pinch runner came around to score on a single by Cayden Calloway.

The Lancers plated two more runs an inning later, but the damage was already done. Maximo De Leon reached on an error and picked up a stolen base. Sean Gannon singled before Austin Carr's RBI groundout plated De Leon. Grant Hartley added an RBI to his tally with a double to left.

The home team, however, was stymied over the final two innings, collecting one hit in that span.

Hartley and Calloway finished the game with two hits apiece with each collecting an RBI as well.

Grace made the most of its three hits in the nightcap, taking advantage of six walks to plate six runs in the 6-4 victory.

The Blue Devils opened up the scoring with three runs in the first two innings before Grace responded with three runs in the third inning to level the score.

Three consecutive batters reached base safely via the free pass to load the bases. The next batter, Austin Carr, made it four straight, earning an RBI on a hit by pitch. Annikan Pettit bounced into a fielder's choice to bring home the second run, and the final run of the inning came on an RBI single from Ryan Stark.

Grace scored the go-ahead run an inning later. After walks to Addison Hickman and John Joyce, Maximo De Leon executed a perfect safety squeeze bunt to score Hickman from third.

The Lancers added two valuable insurance runs in the sixth inning to stretch the lead to three. Cayden Calloway led off the inning with a double down the line to get into scoring position. Josh Cosme attempted a sacrifice bunt, but a throwing error on the defense allowed Calloway score. Later in the inning, Matt Friesema hit a sacrifice fly to center, plating Cosme.

Grace's pitching staff held the visitors at-bay for much of the game. Evan Etchison and Sam Justice combined to pitch out of a couple of bases-loaded jams and strand multiple runners on the day.

Lawrence Tech made things interesting in its final at-bat. One run came across after two singles and a defensive miscue with no one out. Later with two outs, the Blue Devils loaded the bases to put the go-ahead run on first. Grace was able to escape the rally by inducing a game-ending ground ball to third.

Etchison settled down after giving up runs early, collecting his second victory of the year. He picked up three strikeouts in 4.0 innings of work.

Justice pitched the final three innings to record the save. He scattered four hits, allowing an unearned run while notching two strikeouts.

Six different players scored in the game and five players recorded an RBI.

De Leon contributed 1 hit, 1 RBI, 1 walk and 1 run. Calloway went 1 for 2 with a walk and a run; Stark added one hit and one RBI.

Next up for Grace will be the Crossroads League opener. The split doubleheader against No. 14 Indiana Wesleyan will feature two games at Tom  Roy - UPI Park on March 1 and two games  at IWU on March 2. Both days are scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
