Lancers fall in series finale

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - Grace's baseball team completed its three-game series against Keiser on Saturday afternoon, dropping the series finale 16-6.

The Lancers found themselves in an early 4-0 hole after the first inning. Keiser jumped out of the gate with four runs on four hits to take the early advantage. The home team tacked on another run in the second before Grace could respond with a run of its own.

Patrick Danforth plated the first run of the game for Grace with an RBI double to bring home John Joyce. Later in the third, Maximo De Leon and Sean Gannon reached safely to load the bases, but the Seahawks induced an inning-ending double play to halt the rally.

Trailing 6-1 after three innings, the visitors stormed back to knot the game at six. The Lancers combined for five hits in the inning and took advantage of a pair of defensive miscues to plate five runs.

Austin Carr reached on a throwing error which was followed by Annikan Pettit's two-run blast to center field. After a pair of base hits, De Leon laced an RBI single to right to get within two. The speedy De Leon stole second, forcing another miscue which allowed Danforth to scraper home. The five-run inning was capped off by an RBI single from Gannon.

Grace's bats were held in check the rest of the way. The best opportunity down the stretch came in the seventh inning. Gannon reached base for the third time in the game with a leadoff single. Matt Friesema roped a double to left to set up two runners on with one out, but the side was retired before a run could cross the plate.

The Lancers were within striking distance at 10-6, but the Seahawks scored 10 unanswered runs after the Lancers tied the ballgame at six to pull away.

Danforth went 2 for 5 on the day with a double, RBI and run scored; De Leon added two hits to go along with an RBI, two stolen bases and a run. Pettit recorded his first collegiate home run, going 1 for 3 with 2 RBIs, a walk and a stolen base.

Grace's next series will take them to Tennessee for a four-game set with UT Southern on Feb. 16-17.
