Game Recap: Baseball |

Late rally falls short at No. 21 Taylor

UPLAND, Ind. - Grace's baseball team battled back from a 3-0 deficit to tie the game in the final inning of game two, but a walk-off run by No. 21 Taylor spoiled the upset bid on Friday afternoon.

The Trojans jumped out to an early lead in the front-end of the doubleheader to win 9-4, eventually claiming both games on the day.

The Lancers found themselves behind by eight runs after three innings. Grace scored its first run of the game an inning later in the fourth.

Maximo De Leon started the frame with a single. He advanced to third after a defensive miscue that allowed Sean Gannon to reach safely. The run-scoring hit came off the bat of Austin Carr.

Grace added three more runs a couple innings later with one in the seventh and two in the eighth.

Ryan Stark hit a two-out double, and the next batter, Cayden Calloway, drove him in with a single of his own.

The next inning, Addison Hickman walked and stole a base. After a walk to De Leon, Gannon hit a single, but the runner advancing from third was nabbed at the plate. One batter later, Carr provided an extra-base hit to plate two runs to cut the deficit to five. But that is as close as the Lancers would get.

Calloway, Stark and Carr each had two hits. Carr added 3 RBIs and Stark swiped two bases. De Leon contributed a hit, a walk and two runs.

Taylor scored in consecutive innings to take an early 3-0 advantage after two innings in the nightcap.

The Lancers chipped away at the lead, scoring a run in the third and one more in the fifth to set the stage for the final inning.

Sean Gannon earned a walk in the third and his courtesy runner, Addison Hickman, stole second to get into scoring position. Later with two outs, Austin Carr drove in the first run with an RBI single.

In the fifth, Gannon and Hickman produced a carbon copy of the third, a walk followed by a stolen base. Carr once again drove in the run, this time with an RBI groundout.

The Lancers were down to their final out when they produced back to back hits to score a run to even the score in the top of the seventh inning.

Maximo De Leon roped a double to get into scoring position. He was followed by Austin Carr who hit the game-tying single to bring home the speedy De Leon.

In the bottom half, the Trojans manufactured the winning run with an RBI single to empty the dugout.

Ryan Stark had a three-hit game to pace the team. Austin Carr drove in all three Lancer runs with a pair of singles.

The Lancers will resume the four-game set at Taylor on Saturday. The doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m.
