Grace rallies late for walk-off win

WINONA LAKE, Ind. - Grace College's softball team picked up its second walk-off victory of the season with a 12-11 victory over Taylor on Tuesday afternoon.

The Lancers (7-11, 3-7 Crossroads League) overcame a five-run deficit in the final three innings which set the table for Tia O'Connor to pick up the game winning RBI. O'Connor now has seven RBIs in her last five games.

The first game of Tuesday's double header was Grace's third straight contest in which they scored more than 10 runs. That streak came to an end in the second game with a 7-1 Lancer loss.

The first two innings of game one were scoreless as each pitcher scattered contact across the opening frames

Taylor's (14-12, 5-5 CL) offense came to live in the third inning as the Trojans drew first blood. Taylor scored five runs in the inning to grab a commanding lead.

Not to be out done, the Lancers nearly matched the Trojans total in the home half of the inning.

Bela Duran and Halle Nett started the frame with a pair of hits and Jeri Ellis had a ground ball that brought in Duran for Grace's first run of the game.

Madison Gainey added to Grace's total with an RBI and O'Connor continued her hot streak with a sacrifice fly that scored Cassie Hayes. Sage Ladig brought Grace to within a single run when her line drive allowed Gainey to cross home plate.

Grace tied the game in the fourth inning when Duran scored after a hard-hit line drive from Hayes.

When Taylor had their turn at the plate in the fifth, they took full advantage. The Trojans plated five runs in an inning for the second time of the game and re established their five-run cushion.

Grace continued to pester Taylor and began the comeback with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Avery Sleeth, Ashlyn Erwin and Duran all had RBIs in the frame.

After surrendering a run in the top of the inning, Grace was down to their final three outs while trailing 11-8.

Duran sparked hope in the Lancers lineup with a one-out double and Nett followed it up with a single that gave Grace runners on the corner.

The comeback picked up steam when Ellis made hard contact on a ball that reached the outfield fence which allowed Duran and Nett to safely cross home plate and draw the Lancers to within one.

Kyrah Lewis was chosen to pinch run for Ellis but it appeared that Grace would not be able to make use of her speed after a line out had Grace down to their final out.

Determined to not let Grace's comeback fall short, Gainey blasted a ground ball that zipped past the Trojan pitcher and into the outfield. It was all the opportunity that Lewis needed to score from second base and tie the game at 11.

The game did not stay tied for long though, as Hayes hit a double to center field that allowed Gainey to score all the way from first for the walk-off victory.

Duran starred in the win with four hits in five at bats. Grace had seven players with multiple hits in the game. Chole Huff earned the victory for Grace.

Taylor jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in game two and never looked back.

O'Connor extended her RBI streak with a solo shot in the second inning, but it was the only offense the Lancers were able to muster as they dropped game two 7-1.

Grace will return to action on Thursday for a showdown with Goshen.
