Multi-run innings push Grace to victory

WINONA LAKE, Ind. - Grace's baseball team picked up its third straight victory with 14-7 triumph over Goshen on Saturday afternoon.

The Lancers (11-20, 5-14 CL) trailed early before scoring eight unanswered runs to take control of the game.

Goshen (11-20, 6-13 CL) plated three runs over the first two frames to hold the early advantage 3-0, but five runs in the bottom half of second put the home team ahead for good.

After the first two runners reached in the inning, Cayden Calloway laced a double to the gap, scoring Grant Hartley and Mason Meyer. The next two batters reached safely and executed a double steal to get into scoring position. A wild pitch allowed the tying run to score. Matt Friesema finished the five-run rally with a single to bring home two more.

The Lancers tacked on two more an inning later with back-to-back doubles from Sean Gannon and Hartley. Later, Calloway provided a sac fly to bring home Hartley.

Grace added a run for the third consecutive inning when Gannon provided an RBI single to score Friesema, making it 8-3.

Goshen chipped away at the lead to get within three runs, but another five-run inning from Grace broke the game open again.

Five consecutive batters reached safely in the seventh frame. A walk and an error started the inning and Calloway hit another 2-RBI double. Addison Hickman reached with a double as well and Pat Danforth brought them all in with his three-run blast.

The Maple Leafs scored two runs in the eighth in an attempt to get closer, bringing about a pitching change. Joey Springer came out of the bullpen to get the final two outs to end the threat.

The Lancers added one final run with a no-doubt homer from Hartley in the eighth.

Kyle Showley started the game and made way for Steven Hernandez after 2.0 innings of work. Hernandez struck out the side in his first inning on the mound on his way to picking up the win and five Ks overall.

Grace clubbed 14 hits on the day with five batters recording multi-hit games. Calloway contributed five RBIs while going 2 for 4 with a run. Hartley reach base in all five of his at-bats with 3 hits, 2 walks, 4 runs and 2 RBIs.

The Lancers will look to conclude their series with the Maple Leafs on April 1 at Tom  Roy - UPI Park.
