Game Recap: Softball |

Lancers offense powers two Grace victories

MELBOURNE, Fla. - Grace College's softball team swept both games on Thursday to wrap up the second of a three-day trip to Florida.

Grace (3-3) had a dominant offensive performance in game one which powered the Lancers to a 10-3 victory over Calumet St. Joseph.

Offense came less freely in the second game of the doubleheader but Grace unleashed the bats for a four run fourth inning which proved the be enough to claim a 4-2 victory over Lourdes.

Jeri Ellis had a stellar performance for Grace in the circle, getting the starting nod in both games. She pitched a total of 10 innings and picked up the win in both contests.

Grace started the day with a mid-afternoon showdown against Calumet.

After the first inning passed without incident the Lancers used a pair of hits to draw first blood. Cassie Hayes had a single to center field before eventually coming around to score when Avery Sleeth connected on a two-out triple.

Halle Nett had a single in the third inning and advanced to scoring position but Grace was unable to take advantage as they maintained a 1-0 lead entering the fourth inning.

AfJerri Ellis got the start in the circle for Grace and kept the Crimson Wave at bay through two innings, before a two-out rally saw Calumet plate a pair of runs to capture a 2-1 advantage entering the fourth.

The Crimson Wave's lead was short lived though, as the Lancers' bats came alive in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Tia O'Connor and Hayes started the inning with a pair of singles. A hard line out from Maisy Harlow allowed O'Connor to score the tying run while Kali Kahalekomo, who was pinch running for Hayes, stole second base to move into scoring position with just one out.

The bases were then loaded for Grace after Sleeth earned a walk which was followed by a Madison Gainey single down the left field line. Montana Brincks picked up an unconventional RBI after showing great patience at the plate to earn a bases loaded walk.

Nett pushed Grace's lead to 5-2 with a single and she advanced to scoring position after swiping second base. Brinks came into score and Nett moved to third after a passed ball, but Grace was not done scoring.

Ellis picked up an RBI with a single before advancing to third thanks to a passed ball and a wild pitch. The bases were loaded for a second time for Grace in the inning when O'Connor and Hayes earned consecutive walks. Harlow was also walked which saw the Grace lead grow to 8-2.

Sleeth capped the fourth inning barrage off with a double to left field that scored O'Connor and Hayes to score runs that gave Grace a 10-2 lead entering the bottom of the inning.

Ellis made quick work of the Crimson Wave in the bottom of the fourth inning retiring Calumet in order.

Grace narrowly missed picking up the run-rule victory as Calumet plated a solo in the fifth inning to pull within seven runs.

Freshman Chloe Huff replaced Ellis in the circle for the final two innings. Huff blanked the Crimson Wave while picking up a pair of strikeouts to seal the 10-3 win for Grace.

The Lancers had nine different players reach base in the contest, led by Sleeth who had two extra-base hits which led to a pair of RBIs. Nett also recorded a pair of RBIs on two hits while also collecting a stolen base.

Grace and Lourdes each had a single in the first inning but neither squad threatened to score. The Lancers' hit came courtesy of Bela Duran.

The Gray Wolves nearly broke through in the bottom of the second inning as they loaded the bases with two outs. Ellis remained unfazed however, slamming the door on Lourdes' potential big inning as she struck out the Gray Wolves hitter to collect the third out.

Neither team threatened in the third inning which allowed Grace to copy the script from game one as they once again used the fourth frame as their offensive catalyst.

O'Connor started the inning with a walk and in her stead as a pinch runner Kahalekomo stole her second base of the day. First base wasn't left unoccupied for long as Hayes was placed on the open bag with a walk. Harlow then loaded the bases after the Gray Wolves infielders couldn't handle a well placed bunt.

Sleeth added another RBI to the three she collected in the first inning when she was struck by a pitch that brought in the first run of the game.

Brinks then doubled down the left field line that scored two more runs as the Grace advantage grew to 3-0. Nett closed out the scoring for Grace with a sacrifice fly that allowed Sleeth to cross the plate as Grace led 4-0 entering the bottom of the fourth.

The Gray Wolves tried to claw back in the home half of the inning as they produced  runners on the corners with two outs. Rising to the occasion for the second time was Ellis who picked up another timely strikeout to preserve the 4-0 lead.

Lourdes finally broke up the shutout in the fifth inning as they loaded the bases with just one out. The Gray Wolves were only able to cross one run though as the Lancers defense limited the damage.

Huff came in to relieve Ellis for the second straight game. She worked through the sixth inning cleanly and got out of jam while allowing only one run in the final frame to pick up the save and clinch the 4-2 win for Grace.

Huff and Ellis stranded 15 runners for the Gray Wolves in the victory.

The Lancers will close out their Florida trip on Friday with games against Cleary and Siena Heights.
