HUNTINGTON, Ind. - Grace College's softball dropped a pair of high-scoring contests against Huntington on Friday afternoon.
The Lancers (10-20, 6-16 Crossroads League) and Foresters combined for 43 runs in the two games, as Huntington walked away wins by scores 12-11 and 13-7.
Cassie Hayes had a stellar showing at the plate on Friday. She finished with four hits, three walks and five RBIs.
Tia O'Connor had five hits.
In the opener of Friday's two-game slate, Grace jumped ahead to an early 3-0 lead.
Bela Duran earned her way on board with a leadoff walk and Hayes pushed her across for the game's first run with a RBI double.
Hayes and
Madison Gainey scored in the opening inning as well thanks to a well hit ball from
Montana Brincks.
Grace's 3-0 lead lasted until the bottom of the third inning when Huntington broke up the shutout.
The Foresters added another run in the fourth inning before adding four runs in the fifth inning to jump ahead 6-3. Huntington added two more runs to their advantage in the sixth inning to take a five-run lead into the final frame.
The Lancers offense exploded in the seventh inning as they blitzed Huntington for eight runs. Nine players reached base safely for Grace in the inning, which included Hayes who had a three RBI double that gave the Lancers an 11-8 lead.
In the bottom of the seventh, Huntington extended their streak to five straight innings with a run as they crossed three runs to grab the dramatic 12-11 victory.
Eight different players had a hit for Grace in the game and five players reached safely multiple times. Hayes led the way with three hits, a walk and four RBIs.
In game two, Grace again struck in the opening inning. Hayes added another RBI to an already impressive showing and O'Connor added another with a single that scored
Halle Nett.
The lead was cut in half in the second inning when Huntington got on the board, the Lancers struck again in the top of the third.
Gainey had an RBI single that allowed
Jeri Ellis to score and
Avery Sleeth and a two RBI double to give the Lancers a 5-1 lead.
The advantage was short lived however, as Huntington crossed five runs in the home-half of the third to catapult into the lead.
The fourth inning was a scoreless frame before both teams scored in the fifth.
Sage Ladig doubled which allowed both
Kyrah Lewis and Kali Kahlekomo to come around to score to give the Lancers a 7-6 lead that lasted until Huntington tied the game in the bottom of the inning.
The Foresters took a stranglehold on the game in the sixth inning with six runs that allowed them to hold on for the 13-7 lead.
Grace's offense was again well represented with 11 hits from eight players. O'Connor led the Lancers with three hits.
Grace will be back in action on Saturday for a Crossroads League doubleheader with Bethel.
