Lancers earn split with Taylor after run-rule victory

UPLAND, Ind. - Grace College's softball team dominated Taylor in game one of Tuesday's double with an 8-0 run-rule victory.

The Lancers (13-23, 9-19 Crossroads League) dropped game two by a narrow 5-4 margin.

Grace now sits just one back of eighth place and the final spot in the Crossroads League tournament. Grace is currently chasing Huntington and will play host to the Foresters on Friday.

In game one both teams were retired in order, but Grace blew the game wide open in the second frame.

Madison Gainey and Avery Sleeth had back-to-back doubles which resulted in the first run of the game.

Montana Brincks walked and Kaitlyn Seagrave had an RBI single to double the Lancers advantage.

Halle Nett drove in another run and Bella Duran had a two RBI to grow Grace lead to 5-0. Jeri Ellis had the Lancers; fourth double of the inning and final RBI with a hit that allowed Duran to score which sent the game into the bottom of the frame with Grace leading 6-0.

Both offenses went quite over the middle innings as Ellis was nearly untouchable from the circle for Grace. The senior allowed just four hits in the game while recording the complete game shutout.

In the top of the fifth inning Grace added two more runs which set the table for the run-rule win.

Sage Ladig and Seagrace each had RBIs in the inning to push the lead to 8-0.

The Trojans got one runner into scoring position in the home half of the inning but they could not solve Ellis as Grace picked up the 8-0 win.

Duran, Ellis and Gainey all had multiple hits and Seagrave had two RBIs.

In game two the Trojans scored their first run of the afternoon in the bottom of the first inning. Their advantage was short lived though as Grace struck back in their second turn at bat.

Tia O'Connor got on board with a leadoff walk and Kali Kahalekom, who was pinch running for her, promptly stole second base. Bree Gardinier then had a two-run home run that catapulted Grace into the lead.

In the fourth inning the Lancers doubled their run total.

Gainey, Gardinier, Brincks and Seagrave had consecutive singles that pushed across a pair of runs to push the Lancers' lead to 4-1.

In the bottom of the fourth frame, Taylor chipped away with a solo home run to pull within two runs. The Trojans crossed three more runs in the fifth inning to edge ahead 5-4.

The Lancers were unable to answer back in the final two innings, dropping game two 5-4.

Gardinier led Grace with two hits and two RBIs while Brincks was a perfect 3-3 from the plate.
