FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Grace College's volleyball team improved to 5-0 on the season with a pair of victories on Friday at Onset Invitational.
The Lancers' 5 game winning streak, which includes wins over No. 16 IU Kokomo and No. 6 Midland, is their best unbeaten-streak to start a season since 2020.
Grace is also one of two teams in the Crossroads League who still boast an unblemished record (Mt. Vernon).
In Friday's opening game against West Virginia Tech (0-2) The Lancers cruised to a three-set victory.
Anna Ballengee and
Sahara Bee had back-to-back kills and Bee and
Livia Tate teamed up for a block to push Grace out to an early 3-0 lead.
The Lancers never looked back after snagging the early lead, eventually taking set one 25-16. Grace never trailed in the opening set.
Grace's offense hit at a .294 percentage and the Lancers were led by Ballange and
Alisha Voss who each hammered home four kills.
The Golden Bears claimed the first point in set two, but the Lancers defense forced West Virginia Tech into a plethora of miscues which allowed them to jump ahead 4-3.
The game remained tight through the early portions of the set and was tied at nine apiece before Grace edged ahead.
Claire Jackson and
Anna Elkin each had kills and a pair of service aces from
Riley Owens pushed the Lancers ahead 14-9.
Callie Jo Celichowski had three straight kills for Grace which fueled 5-1 run and put Grace in firm control of the set. The Lancers closed out the set with a 25-16 victory.
Set three was dominated by the Lancers.
Aspen Moyer had a service ace and Bree Harris had a kill as Grace blitzed ahead 10-2 to start the set.
West Virginia Tech made a mini run to pull within five of the Lancers, but Grace slammed the door with a 15-3 explosion. Grace scored the final 10 points of the set to claim the 25-8 set victory and secure the sweep of the Golden Bears.
All 17 players saw action for Grace in the contest and 14 different players recorded a kill or a service ace.
The Lancers played Campbellsville (2-4) in game two of the day and narrowly missed laying claim to their second sweep in as many games, ultimately winning 3-1.
The Lancers and Tigers were evenly matched to start their contest, but by the midpoint of the opening set it was Campbellsville who held a 16-12 advantage.
Grace responded with a 8-1 run fueled by suffocating defensive effort. The Lancers had a trio of blocks during the run which saw them catapult ahead 20-17.
The Tigers made a late push by kills from Tate and Voss sealed the 25-23 set one victory.
Grace picked up a convincing 25-17 victory in set two. Grace's offense connected on a .229 clip while holding Campbellsville to just 0.070.
Just one point separated the two teams at 10-9 at the middle of the set before another 10-2 burst propelled Grace to victory.
The Tigers came out in a frenzy in the third set, notching the first eight-points of the frame. Grace slowly chipped away at the deficit and got as close as two points, but were unable to complete the comeback, falling 25-22.
In the fourth set little separation would be had between the two squads. A pair of early kills saw Grace edge ahead 3-0, but they would be on the wrong side of the scoreboard as the set neared its conclusion.
The Lancers used a 6-1 run to overcome a 20-17 deficit, capped by a kill from
Olivia Martinez. Grace still needed to fend off a match point from the Tigers before scoring the final three points of the set to claim the 26-24 set win and clinch the 3-1 match victory.
Grace was led by an impressive showing from Voss, who had 16 kills and five blocks. Ballengee had 15 kills and Bee and Tate each had four kills.
Morgan Syoen led the Lancers with 24 assists and Riley Ownes followed close behind with 20.
Grace will return to Fort Wayne on Saturday to close out the Onset Invitational with games against Oakland City and RV Aquinas.
