SENSATIONAL SEVEN: Grace improves to 7-0 with goal party

WINONA LAKE, Ind. - Grace's women's soccer team wore out the nets at 1st Source Bank Field, erupting with an 8-0 rout of Governors State on Saturday.

The Lancers maintained their unblemished season, improving to 7-0 with their seventh shutout of the season.

Grace's seven shutouts lead the NAIA, and the team has the third-best goal differential in the country (plus-28 goals on the season).

Overall, 10 players for Grace were involved in the scoring. Rylee Burns and Cassidy Felger each collected a hat trick of assists, and Amy Wearing had two goals and an assist to headline the offense.

Grace immediately controlled the pace of the match, moving the ball into dangerous territory early and often.

The Lancers created several goal-scoring chances in the beginning minutes. Abby Hodkin and Felger each had shots in the box that were saved. Felger's second shot was a header that was parried off the crossbar by GSU's goalkeeper.

Through 20 minutes of play, Grace had taken all six shot attempts of the match. The Jaguars owned only slivers of time with the ball in their possession.

The Lancers' assault eventually broke down the Jaguars, producing an explosion of goals.

Grace's first goal came with 15 minutes to play in the half. Rosalie Gefrorer picked out Abby Hodkin just outside the penalty box.

Hodkin shot quickly from distance, catching the Jaguars' goalkeeper off guard and finding the back of the net. Hodkin now has a team-leading seven goals in seven matches – exactly one goal in every game so far.

Less than two minutes later, Grace's lead had doubled. Burns entered off the bench during the goal stoppage and made an immediate impact.

Burns stole the ball from a Jaguar player, sprinted into a crossing position and put a perfect cross in front of the goal. Wearing volleyed the shot into the back of the net.

A similar play unfolded just a few minutes later. Felger muscled by a defender on the right side of the box and fired a cross in the box, which was tapped into the empty net by Tori Twombly.

Grace finished the half with a dominant 18-1 advantage in shots and 5-1 in corner kicks. All three of Grace's goals were scored in less than five minutes of action as the Lancers charged into halftime ahead 3-0.

The Lancers began the second half on an emphatic note. Before two minutes had expired, Grace scored again.

Lilli Oberhoff led Feline Abbo along the left sideline. Abbo crossed into the box, and Rosalie Gefrorer rifled her shot under the crossbar for another goal.

The score remained 4-0 for the next 17 minutes until fatigue seemed to take hold of the Jaguars.

From the 64th minute to the 76th minute, Grace ripped off four more goals.

In the 64th minute, a patient attack resulted in a shot off the crossbar from Ellie Grieser. In the ensuing loose ball, Felger touched a pass in the box to Madelief Lowik. A few deft dribbles allowed Lowik to sidestep the goalkeeper and tap her shot into the net.

Three minutes later, Burns crossed again into a dangerous positions, and Grieser calmly slotted her shot past the goalkeeper.

In the 73rd minute, Oberhoff danced by two defenders and found space inside the penalty box. She laid off a pass to Wearing who fired a shot into the goal.

Shortly after Grace's seventh goal, a Jaguar player was issued a red card after officials judged the situation with video review.

Grace quickly scored again not long after the red card with Felger and Burns connecting with Grieser on a blazing counterattack.

The shutout was recorded by Ivy Cline in her first collegiate match. The freshman made three saves, including a diving stop in the second half, to preserve Grace's NAIA-best seventh shutout.

The Lancers finished the match with a 33-5 shot advantage. Fourteen of Grace's shots were on goal, and six players scored.

Grace's eight goals were the most scored by the Lancers since a 12-0 win over West Virginia Tech on Sept. 3, 2022.

Grace's 7-0 start is the best since the 2015 team that began the year 8-0. The program's record for best start is the 2009 squad that began the year 10-0.

The Lancers will face one of their tougher nonconference tests on Wednesday at home. Grace will host four-time NAIA champions Lindsey Wilson on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
