WINONA LAKE, Ind. - Grace's men's tennis team picked up a huge victory with a hard-fought battle against #RV Huntington on Monday afternoon. The hotly contested matchup featured the final two unbeaten teams in the conference standings. The Lancers extended their conference win streak, spanning nearly three seasons, with a 4-3 victory.
Grace (6-0, 6-0 CL) split the first two doubles matches of the day before
Artur Pons and
Luis Cordoba put in a clutch performance to bring home the doubles point from the No. 3 slot.
Pablo Gregori and
Salva Pons were on the wrong end of the 6-1 match on court one, but
Roko Misura and
Manuel Marques picked up their match 6-1.
Singles play was a nail-biter with both teams seemingly in control of the momentum at different times. Gregori scored the first point from singles with a 6-2, 6-1 showing on court one. With his victory, he tied the career singles wins mark with number 49.
The Foresters cut the deficit in half with a point from No. 2 doubles over
Salva Pons.
Artur Pons, however, put the home team back up by a pair with his 7-5, 6-3 battle on court three.
The final three pairings needed a third set to determine a winner with Grace needing just one point to clinch the match outright. Court 4 and court 6 finished almost simultaneously with each team claiming a point. The Huntington point over Cordoba at No. 4 singles was overshadowed by the team celebration on court six when
Manuel Marques finished off his opponent 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 to finish the match.
With his team already the victor,
Benjamin Rahine retired from his match that was tied 5-5 in the third set.
The Lancers pause conference play to compete in the ITA Regionals Championships September 19-22. The tournament is hosted by Indiana Wesleyan. Grace will resume conference play against Spring Arbor on Sept. 24.
