WINONA LAKE, Ind. - Grace's volleyball team won its fifth consecutive match on Saturday, sinking Bethel in four sets at the Manahan Orthopaedic Capital Center.
The defense and serving was sharp for the No. 19 Lancers (11-2, 5-1 Crossroads League); the Pilots were largely muted on offense, and Grace held onto a tie for second place in the league standings.
Grace served up 11 aces in the win, including a pair from Emma Blackford. Blackford recorded ace No. 100 and 101 in her career. Blackford is just the ninth player in team history to serve up 100 aces.
The first set saw little separation at the beginning until Bethel earned a slight gap at 14-11.
Grace's response was decisive. The Lancers erupted with a 9-1 run. Livia Tate had a kill and two blocks, and Anna Elkin had two more kills.
The Lancers used that momentum to ease away for a 25-20 win.
The Pilots (11-7, 2-4 CL) countered with a seven-point win in the second set, holding Grace to eight kills in the set.
Grace's defense was elite in the third set. Bethel was held to a .000 hitting percentage thanks to Grace's four blocks.
Leah Henderson was a spark off the bench; she was involved in all four of Grace's block points in the set.
Riley Owens also served up two of Grace's three aces in the set as the Lancers blitzed the Pilots for a 25-16 win.
In the fourth set, Grace held a 14-9 lead. The Pilots rallied to within one point at 15-14, but Grace countered by winning six of the next eight points.
Anna Ballengee had two pivotal kills during that stretch, and Blackford entered to serve out the victory. She aced on the final serve, handing Grace a 25-18 victory.
Blackford aced twice and finished with seven digs on her milestone night.
Voss led the team with 10 kills, 1 solo block and 2 block assists, Ballengee had 9 kills, 5 digs and 2 block assists, and Sahara Bee added seven kills.
Tate finished with 4 kills, 2 solo blocks and 6 block assists, Jadyn Ross had six kills, and Olivia Martinez added 11 digs and two aces.
Liz Schmidt had 13 digs, Morgan Syoen tallied 20 assists, 3 aces, 9 digs and 2 kills, and Owens added 13 assists, 3 aces, and 9 digs.
Grace finished the match with 11 aces and 11 block assists.
Next week, the Lancers travel to No. 16 Mt. Vernon Nazarene on Wednesday for a Top-20 showdown. On Saturday, Grace will return home to host Huntington at 1 p.m.
