Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Lancers come from behind to beat Trojans

UPLAND, Ind. - Grace College's men's soccer team topped Taylor 2-1 on Saturday afternoon.

The Lancers (2-5-2, 1-1-0 Crossroads League) surrendered the first goal in the game but answered back with two markers before the halftime intermission which fueled them to the victory.

The game winning goal came off the foot of Kyle Holwerda with just over a minute remaining in the first half.

The victory keeps Grace mid table in the Crossroads League standing with home games against No. 5 Indiana Wesleyan and RV Marian on tab for next week.

Saturday's contest did not get off to a promising start for the Lancers. After a pair of Grace shots, Taylor (4-3-2, 0-1-1 CL) crossed a perfect ball into the box off of a corner kick and a Trojan player headed the ball into goal to put the Lancers behind 1-0 just 12 minutes into the game.

Grace settled into the flow of the game after the Trojan marker and made several dangerous tries toward goal and 12 minutes after surrendering a goal the Lancers tied the game.

The Lancers' marker was a near perfect mirror image of the first goal as Teague Misner crossed a corner kick to the far side of the net and Dan Allen got into perfect position to head past the keeper and even the score.

Grace continued to press the issue, holding the majority of possession throughout the opening half. The Lancers were nearly rewarded for their efforts after Josh Cruz received a deep outlet pass and made a move past the lone defender between him and the goalie. His ensuing shot was thwarted by the outstretched hand of the diving keeper to keep the game level.

Grace's offensive persistence seemed to frustrated the Trojans as they were given two yellow cards just 1:16 apart late in the the half after denying the Lancers a clean play at the ball.

The relentless attack finally wore down the Trojans back line with just 1:09 left in the half. Daniel Santos Rosa chipped an aggressive through ball to Holwerda who made a great run and redirected it past the goalie to give Grace a 2-1 lead heading into the halftime break.

Grace out shot Taylor 12-3 in the first half and held a 5-2 corner kick advantage.

The Lancers continued to be the aggressor in the second half as four of the first five shots of the last frame came from Grace. The Lancers also earned three corner kicks as they continued to dominate the possession.

As the clock ticked under 20 minutes remaining the urgency of the situation seemed set in on Taylor. The Trojans had back-to-back shots off of corner kicks but each time Grace's defense held firm.

Taylor's last ditch effort came with five minutes remaining but Matteo Conci easily handled the shot and Grace controlled play to the final whistle to hold on for the 2-1 lead.

The Lancers closed out the game with a 19-9 shot advantage and an 11-4 advantage in corner kicks. Conci made three saves in the win.

The Lancers game against IWU on Wednesday is set for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
