Lancers breeze past Maple Leafs

GOSHEN, Ind. - A balanced offensive afternoon earned Grace's volleyball team a sweep at Goshen on Saturday.

The Lancers (12-11, 5-6 Crossroads League) had six players with at least four kills, helping Grace earn a comfortable road sweep.

The match could not have started any better for Grace. The Lancers scored the first five points of the match, sparked by an ace by Olivia Martinez, two blocks from Livia Tate and a kill by Leah Henderson.

The Lancers kept a margin, although Goshen managed to pull within two at 14-12. But a quick 6-0 spurt put the score out of reach, and Grace eased away to a 25-16 win.

The second set began evenly with the score knotted at 10s. Grace broke open the deadlock with six unanswered points, however, keyed by back-to-back kills from Callie Jo Celichowski and an ace by Liz Schmidt.

The Maple Leafs were unable to recover as Grace won by six (25-19).

Grace used another big run in the beginning of the third set to seize momentum. The Lancers rattled off eight straight points to open up a cushion. Emma Blackford aced twice in a row during Grace's run.

The Lancers' offense proved to be too much in the set as Grace coasted to a 25-14 victory to wrap up the sweep.

Schmidt impressed with 12 digs, 7 assists and 3 aces, and Tate added 3 kills, 2 solo blocks and 2 block assists.

Anna Elkin had a match-high seven kills on a .316 percentage, Henderson had six kills with three block assists, and Molly Hofmann added six kills and three digs.

Abby Leffring notched four kills on a .400 percentage, Celichowski had five kills, and Levyn Snow earned four kills.

Reese McCutchan tallied 13 assists and six digs, Carsyn Witt had 10 assists with eight digs, and Martinez amassed seven digs and two aces.

The Lancers return home on Wednesday, hosting No. 21 Taylor at 7 p.m.
