SPRING ARBOR, Mich. - Grace College's men's soccer team turned in an impressive performance in a 4-1 victory over Spring Arbor on Wednesday night.
The Lancers (10-3-2, 4-2 Crossroads League) scored the game opening goal in dramatic fashion in the final minute of the opening half, before finding the back of the net three times in the second half to fuel the 4-1 win.
As the conference slate passes the midway point, Grace sits at third place in the Crossroads League and are just two points behind No. 9 Indiana Wesleyan for the conference lead.
Wednesday's night contest got off to a slow start as neither side was able to generate sustained offensive possession.
The first chance of the game went to the Lancers when
Joao Pereira had a shot on goal. His shot was saved by Spring Arbor's (8-3-4, 3-2-1 CL) keeper which led to a corner kick opportunity which the Cougars were able to survive.
Vasco Tavares forced another save from the Cougars' keeper at the midpoint of the half before the game slowed into a grind for much of the remainder of the half.
As the game entered the final minutes of the opening half it looked as if both teams would enter the intermission goalless. However, with just over 30 seconds left Tavares sent a clearing pass from his own goal box. The ball bounced off a Spring Arbor player at midfield and
Diego Yanes launched a long range missile from the midfield line. His shot looped over the head of the keeper and sailed into the back of the net to give Grace the 1-0 lead with just 17 seconds left.
After scoring the dramatic goal, Grace continued to force the action early in the second period. The Lancers had a pair of early shots before doubling their lead with just under 30 minutes to go.
The Lancers second goal was again a result of the Lancers quickly flipping the field.
Juan Garcia worked the ball from deep in his own zone up to midfield before rifling a pass across the width of the pitch to
Luis Munoz. Munoz then dribbled past a defender and sliced the ball past the keeper to push Grace ahead 2-0.
Spring Arbor cut the lead in half after converting on a penalty kick, but the Lancers answered back just six minutes later.
This time it was
Joao Laranjo who scored off of an assist from Munoz to reestablish the two goal cushion. Less than two minutes later Grace put the game out of reach. Laranjo scored again to put the Lancers ahead 4-1 off a nice feed from Pereira.
Over the final 24 minutes Spring Arbor managed just one shot as
Pedro Galante secured the win for Grace.
The Lancers held a wide margin in shots, out shooting the Cougars 14-4. Each side had just one corner kick.
The Lancers will be back in action on Saturday as they host Goshen at 5 p.m.
