Lancers handle USF in sweep

WINONA LAKE, Ind. - Grace's volleyball team continued its winning ways, sweeping St. Francis on Wednesday night.

The Lancers (14-12, 7-7 Crossroads League) have won three of their past four matches and now sit tied for fifth place in the league standings.

Grace enjoyed a strong all-around performance, attacking efficiently and defending diligently.

The Lancers racked up 39 kills with 14 errors for a team hitting percentage of .227; the Cougars had more attack errors (26) than kills (23) for a negative team percentage (-.025).

Anna Elkin got Grace off to a strong start in the match. The sophomore tallied four kills across the first seven rallies, pushing Grace to an early 6-2 lead.

The Cougars managed to rally and trim Grace's lead to one at 13-12. But Grace took command down the stretch, ending the set on a furious 12-1 charge to win 25-13. Elkin had six kills in the opening set to power the Lancers.

The second set remained close for much of the way. Neither team earned a significant margin as the score remained tied at 18s.

Kills from Livia Tate, Molly Hofmann and Levyn Snow helped Grace grab separation, and the Lancers rolled away to a 25-20 victory.

In the third set, Grace muted USF to just five kills. The Lancers raced out to a 12-5 lead and never looked back.

A kill from Snow ended the set 25-11, completing the sweep for Grace.

Elkin amassed a match-high 14 kills on just one error for an impressive .433 percentage. Livia Tate finished with six kills and four block assists, and Hofmann added six kills with two block assists.

Snow pounded out six kills, Liz Schmidt passed out 14 digs with eight assists, and Olivia Martinez had five digs and was perfect in 17 serve receive attempts.

Carsyn Witt racked up 12 assists and a match-high 21 digs, and Reese McCutchan added 15 assists.

The Lancers are home again on Saturday as Grace will take on Bethel at 1 p.m. at the Manahan Orthopaedic Capital Center.
