Women’s Soccer earns draw with No. 17 Trojans

WINONA LAKE, Ind. - In the final match of the regular season, Grace's women's soccer team squared off with a ranked opponent at 1st Source Bank Field.

The No. 16 Lancers tied No. 17 Taylor 1-1 in a compelling match on Wednesday.

The draw secures a third-place finish for Grace (13-2-3, 6-2-1 CL) in the Crossroads League. As a result, the Lancers will host sixth-seed Bethel in the quarterfinals of the Crossroads League Tournament next week. Grace will host Bethel on Wednesday at 4 p.m.

Wednesday's match started with plenty of offensive fireworks. Both teams scored a goal and hit a goal frame across the opening 15 minutes.

Taylor (13-2-2, 5-2-2 CL) struck a frame first, clipping the crossbar on a long, looping shot in the fourth minute.

The Lancers found the back of the net, however, just three minutes later. Nora Pollock picked out Rylee Burns with a leading pass on the right edge of the field. Burns burned by a defender and played a pass in front of the goal. Ellie Grieser was on the receiving end, tucking her shot into the net for an early lead.

Grace's lead was erased soon after. Taylor struck back with an equalizer eight minutes after Grieser's goal, capitalizing on a deep shot attempt.

As the half continued, Grace grew more assertive in its attack. Rosalie Gefrorer tried a 20-yard free kick, rifling her shot off the left goalpost.

The Lancers had a few additional chances; two efforts from Nora Pollock each sliced just wide of the goal.

The match entered halftime deadlocked at 1-1. Each team had seven shots in the first half with Grace ahead 2-1 in corner kicks. The Lancers had 61 percent of the possession in the opening half.

The second half saw Grace control large swaths of the game. The Lancers held 63 percent of possession after halftime, outshooting Taylor 9-4.

From the 46th minute to the 78th minute, the Trojans did not record a shot attempt.

Grace, on the other hand, threatened Taylor's goal consistently. Madelief Lowik and Ellie Grieser had shots saved, and Zoe Mueller and Heidi Kever tried long-distance attempts that narrowly missed the goal.

With 15 minutes to go, Grace tried a trio of quick shots, including two attempts from Cassidy Felger and Joya Lienammer that were saved.

The Trojans fired off a handful of deep shots as the clock wore down, but neither team could find a late winner.

Grace finished the match with a 16-11 shot advantage. Grace had a 4-2 edge in corner kicks as well.

Ivy Cline recorded four saves as goalkeeper. Pollock and Lowik led Grace with three shots apiece.
