INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Grace's women's soccer team played another ranked opponent on the road Saturday, falling to No. 3 Marian 2-0 on Saturday.
The match was a defensive battle with just 13 combined shots in the match. Marian made good on two of its seven shot attempts, which was enough to top the No. 18 Lancers.
Marian scored almost immediately into Saturday's match. The Knights (12-0, 4-0 Crossroads League) earned a corner kick in the opening minute and promptly scored.
The Knights shot from the corner of the penalty box, and Grace collided in the box, allowing the ball to fall untouched into the back of the net.
Grace generated a handful of offensive chances. Audrey Abel had a pair; her first was an early free kick from outside the penalty box, and her second was a ricocheted effort inside the box.
Rosalie Gefrorer and Rylee Burns also tried shots that were saved.
Grace went into halftime trailing by one. The teams tied in shots with four apiece.
Chances were hard to come by for either team in the second half. The match remained physical with hard challenges being applied.
Grace had a pair of corner kicks and a shot from Rosalie Gefrorer that rolled wide. The Knights were held without a shot for the first 23 minutes of the second half.
Unfortunately for Grace, Marian's first attempt of the second half produced another goal.
With 22 minutes remaining, Marian scored again. The Knights countered swiftly, scoring from the center of the penalty box to take a two-goal lead.
The Lancers were unable to find a goal-scoring moment the rest of the way and had to settle for the defeat.
Grace finished the match with six shots compared to seven for MU. Four of Grace's shots were on goal, while Marian had two shots on goal and scored on both.
Next up, Grace (9-2-2, 2-2 CL) will play at home twice in a row. The Lancers will host Bethel on Oct. 11 at 7 p.m. and No. 14 Spring Arbor on Oct. 15 at 7 p.m.
