WINONA LAKE, Ind. - Grace's volleyball team fought to the wire against Huntington on Saturday, ultimately falling 3-1.
The four sets were fiercely contested, but the Foresters' offense was more efficient to produce the victory.
In the opening set, Grace had trouble slowing down Huntington's offense. The set was even with the score level at 17s.
HU gained separation with a timely 5-1 spurt, using that gap to win 25-20. The Foresters hit 14 kills on a .237 percentage in the opener.
Grace found revenge with a win in the second set. The Lancers led 20-18 until two attack errors evened the score at 20s.
But Grace took charge down the stretch. A block from Molly Hofmann and Callie Jo Celichowski was followed up by an ace from Liz Schmidt and a kill from Levyn Snow, helping Grace win 25-20.
Leah Henderson was lethal in the set with five kills, and Grace had three block points to help its cause.
In the third set, Grace was plagued by attack errors. The Lancers faced a 21-16 hole, but a well-placed timeout allowed Grace to score four unanswered to pull within one.
The Foresters' attack came alive late, however, producing four kills down the stretch to win by four. The Lancers committed eight attack errors in the set, hitting at a .045 percentage.
Early in the fourth set, Grace scored six unanswered points to open up a 12-7 lead.Â
The Lancers maintained their cushion as kills from Anna Elkin and Livia Tate pushed Grace's cushion to 19-13.
But a timeout from HU helped the Foresters recover; Huntington scored four straight and later scored three in a row, rallying to tie the game at 21-21.
Henderson generated a pair of kills to keep Grace's offense afloat, but the Foresters had the momentum they needed. Huntington scored five of the final seven points, winning in extra points 26-24.
Liz Schmidt racked up a 40-dig performance in just four sets, leading a 99-dig effort for Grace's team. Schmidt also aced twice and had six assists.
Snow had a team-high 13 kills and was perfect in 17 serve receptions, and Henderson had 12 kills on a .267 percentage.
Elkin had nine kills, and Hofmann tallied 8 kills, 1 solo block and 4 block assists.
Emma Blackford amassed 14 digs with an ace, Tate had 4 kills, 1 solo block and 2 block assists, and Celichowski notched three kills and four block assists.
Carsyn Witt (23 assists, 8 digs) and Reese McCutchan (17 assists, 9 digs) directed Grace's offense.
The Lancers will end the regular season on Wednesday, playing at Marian at 7 p.m. Grace can finish anywhere between fifth and eighth place based on Wednesday's results around the league.
