Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Raasch’s perfect night powers Lancers to win

WINONA LAKE, Ind. - The Crossroads League season opened in winning fashion for Grace's men's basketball team on Wednesday night.

The No. 4 Lancers (6-0, 1-0 CL) routed Taylor 89-64 behind a perfect shooting day from Ian Raasch.

Raasch scored 34 points and broke a program record for best field goal percentage in a game; he was perfect from the floor, shooting 13 of 13, including all five of his 3-point attempts. He set a new career-high mark for points in a game in the process.

The Lancers led from start to finish on Wednesday. Grace opened the game with five quick points thanks to a layup from Grady Carpenter and a triple from Hunter Walston.

Ian Raasch started his scoring with a 10-point eruption. He canned two 3s and had two layups to push the Lancers ahead by seven.

Gavin Betten then tallied four points as Grace opened up an 11-point lead.

The Raasch brothers capped off their impressive first half with a highlight play in the final seconds. Tyler Raasch swatted Taylor's final shot attempt of the half, and Ian Raasch collected the rebound and raced the other way. Ian let loose a deep 3-pointer, swishing his shot just as the buzzer sounded to send the home crowd into delirium.

Grace took a 49-39 lead as the contest reached halftime.

Ian Raasch was perfect in the first half, shooting 9 of 9 overall for 23 points; he made all four of his 3-pointers.

Tyler Raasch had 7 points, 3 blocks, 4 boards and 1 steal in a busy half.

Grace shot 58 percent from the floor and 55 percent on 3s. Taylor kept pace by making 50 percent overall.

The Lancers' defense locked down the Trojans to begin the second half. Grace held Taylor to just seven points over the first 9:39 of the half, allowing the Lancers to cruise ahead.

A dunk from Michael Wellman, one of three he had in the half, pushed Grace ahead 67-46 with 11:10 remaining in the game.

Betten tallied seven points in a two-minute span to keep Grace's cushion over 20.

Grace's margin remained over 20 points for the final 10 minutes of the half, allowing the Lancers to roll away for the 25-point margin of victory.

Raasch amassed 34 points with eight rebounds, also drawing eight fouls by the Trojans.

Betten was the second-leading scorer for both teams, notching 15 points (7 of 9 field goals) with four boards, and Tyler Raasch had 9 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 blocks and 2 steals.

Walston collected 8 points, 3 steals and 2 assists, Wellman scored eight, Carpenter produced 4 points, 6 assists and 2 steals, and Cannen Houser passed out a game-high seven assists.

Grace shot 55 percent for the game and 47 percent on 3-pointers, holding Taylor to 41 percent overall and 20 percent from beyond the arc.
