Sperry Scores 36 as Lancers Pull Away in Second Half

WINONA LAKE, Ind. - Grace College's women's basketball team used an impressive scoring performance from Emma Sperry and a strong second half effort to lead to a 111-95 victory over IU Columbus on Tuesday night.

The Lancers (6-3, 0-2 Crossroads League) narrowly outscored the Pride in the first and second quarters before out pacing them by 12 in the final two frames to secure the 16-point victory.

Braylin Terrell had the first four points of the game and Sperry hit a transition 3-point basket to give the Lancers a 7-0 edge.

IU Columbus (1-7) added a trio of buckets, but consecutive trifectas from Morganne Houk kept the Pride from striking distance. Half of the Lancers 12 made field goals in the first quarter were from distance.

Grace led by eight with three minutes left, but a 10-2 from the Pride tied the game at 28. Sperry would send the game to the quarter break with another 3-point shot that gave the Lancers a 31-28 advantage.

IU Columbus captured their first lead of the game early in the second quarter in the midst of a 6-0 run to start the frame. The lead was short lived however as Sperry nailed a pair of shots from beyond the arc to push the Lancers back ahead.

The Lancers made their way to the free throw lane in the middle of the quarter and Terrell rattled off five straight points for Grace pushing the lead to 50-39. The Pride responded well though, going on an 11-0 run to edge ahead by one with 32 seconds left in the half.

Sperry converted two from the charity stripe and Houk hit a last second 3-point field goal to send Grace into the half with a 55-51 lead.

The Lancers had 10 first half 3-point field goals and Sperry led all players with 21 points.

Despite IU Columbus hitting back-to-back 3-point field goals to start the frame the third quarter is where the Lancers took control.

After falling behind 57-55 Grace exploded on an 18-0 run. Four different Lancers scored on the run and Sperry added two more 3-point shots to give the Lancers a commanding lead.

The Pride ended the run with a pair of layups but Grace kept rolling as Bekah Longenbaugh found her touch from deep.

The Lancers hit at a 46 percent clip in the quarter and led 90-78 entering the fourth.

Grace continued to cruise in the final quarter extending their lead to as many as 24 points. Kate Thomas led the way with 11 points keeping the decision from ever being in doubt as Grace won 111-95.

"This was a good bounce back game for our ladies," commented Grace head coach Dan Davis. "We had a spirited film session after our last game and I thought we came out and really competed well. It was great to see Braylin, Bekah and Kate step up and fill the gap that we have because of some injuries. These types of opp will really benefit us later in the season."

Along with her 36 points, Sperry was just one 3-point bucket away from tying the program record for makes in a game. This is the second time this season that she has made eight.

Terrell had a monster double double with 22 points, 16 rebounds and 2 blocks. Houk had 23 points, 6 rebounds and six assists. Thomas also double-doubled with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Grace will be back in action on Dec. 3 at home against Huntington.
