Grace Collects First Win at Holy Cross

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - Grace College's women's basketball team collected its first win of the season with a 98-88 victory over Holy Cross on Tuesday night.

The Lancers never trailed in the contest and had four players en route to the 10-point victory.

Braylin Terrell started the scoring from the charity stripe and Emma Sperry hit a 3-point shot helping the Lancers to a 6-0 lead.

Grace's lead reached double digits by the midpoint of the quarter when Mariah Stoltzfus connected on a trifecta of her own.

Stoltzfus's 3-pointer started a 9-0 run for the Lancers. Maddy Poynter and Becca Gerdt also scored on the quick blitz from the Lancers pushing the lead to 20-4.

Holy Cross showed composure to close out the quarter. The Saints ended the first frame with eight unanswered points to pull within 20-12 at the quarter break. Grace had six different players score in the first frame.

Gerdt scored a bucket and free throw for Grace early in the second frame, which put an end to a 10-0 run for Holy Cross.

Poynter scored and the Lancers forced a quick turnover leading to a bucket from Terrell which reestablished a double digit lead for the Lancers.

At the midpoint of the quarter Lily Kreischer scored off of an assist from Sperry but the Saints continued to fight back, pulling within five points.

Grace again had an answer for the Saints scoring run though as Kate Thomas scored a jumper and Abbie Ritzema scored from beyond the arc.

Poynter scored with just under a minute to go in the opening half to put the Lancers ahead by 12 but the Saints found success from the charity stripe in the final 50 second closing the gap to seven at the half.

Grace shot 37 percent from the floor in the first half while Holy Cross shot 42 percent. The Lancers forced 14 turnovers while committing just seven of their own.

Poynter and Gerdt continued their strong showings scoring the first four points of the second half. Poynter scored 11 points in the quarter four in a row in the middle frame.

Sperry made a trifecta to push the Lancers ahead 65-54 and Terrell and Morganne Houk extended the lead to 18 points. Grace led 74-61 entering the fourth quarter.

Terrell opened the scoring in the final stanza as the Lancers maintained the double digit lead.

Houk scored seven points in the frame as Grace held Holy Cross at arms length throughout the quarter.

The Lancers shot an efficient 43 percent from the floor to close out the game with the 98-88 victory.

The Lancers finished the game shooting 41 percent from the floor while the Saints shot 39 percent. Grace scored 24 points off of turnovers, a 15 point advantage over what Holy Cross was able to convert.

Poynter led the way with 21 points and just behind her with 20 was Gerdt. Gerdt's mark was a new career high. Sperry (17) and Houk also scored in double digits. The Lancers had nine players score at least four points.

Rylea Wetz grabbed eight rebounds and Terrell and Sperry each nabbed seven.

The Lancers will be back in action this Friday as they kick off the Val Weinstein Classic.
