Grace secures win against SXU

WINONA LAKE, Ind. - Grace's men's basketball team collected a convincing 85-64 victory over St. Xavier on Tuesday.

The No. 7 Lancers improve to 4-0 on the season thanks to a strong shooting performance, making 56 percent from the floor as a team.

Hunter Walston helped Grace get off to a fast start. He scored seven points in the first five minutes as Grace grabbed an early 11-7 advantage.

The next minute, Grace began to take control of the game with a 14-2 run. Gavin Betten was a catalyst, racking up nine points in a four-minute span. The Lancers led 27-14 at the midway mark of the half.

Grace stretched its lead as high as 17 and rolled into halftime with a 44-30 advantage. Betten made a layup in the closing seconds, capping off an impressive 17-point performance in the half.

The Lancers shot 63 percent from the floor and made 9 of 11 from the foul line.

Grace had trouble with turnovers to start the second half, but the Lancers' defense prevented SXU from making a run. Tyler Raasch was a key defender, swatting three shots in the first 5:04 of the half.

The Lancers' offense came to life during the next segment of the game. Grace enjoyed a 15-4 run to open up a 22-point lead.

The run was capped off by three straight dunks, including a pair from Michael Wellman and another by Betten.

When the dust had settled, Grace led 65-43 with 9:50 remaining.

The Lancers' cushion hovered around 20 points for the rest of regulation, leading to Grace's 21-point margin of victory.

Grace shot 56 percent from the floor despite only hitting 2 of 13 on 3-pointers. SXU was held to 32 percent shooting.

Betten shot 9 of 11 from the floor, finishing with a game-high 21 points to go along with eight rebounds and two blocked shots. He did his damage in less than 20 minutes of action.

Ian Raasch (12 points, 4 assists, 4 rebounds, 3 steals) and Walston (12 points, 7 assists, 6 rebounds) stuffed the stat sheet, and Tyler Raasch amassed 10 points, 8 rebounds, 6 blocked shots and 3 steals.

Gage Sefton notched six points and nine rebounds, and Grady Carpenter had five points and three assists.

Cannen Houser produced 9 points, 4 assists and 4 steals, and Wellman had six points and a blocked shot. 

The Lancers are on the road next week, traveling to IU East on Nov. 11.
