Grace Closes Perfect Weekend with Rout of Lawrence Tech

WINONA LAKE, Ind. - Grace College's women's basketball team capped off the Val Weinstein Classic with a 112-78 win over Lawrence Tech.

The Lancers' (2-1) had 11 players score in the game and five players scored double digits. Grace's 112 points were the third most points scored in program history, just six off the high water mark  which was set in 2019.

An early three-point basket from the Blue Devils (1-2) had Grace behind 3-1, but it would be the only time they trailed as they dominated from start to finish.

A steal from Abbie Ritzema sprung Emma Sperry for the game tying basket then Maddy Poynter went on a solo 8-0 run as Grace blitzed ahead 11-3. Grace had six players score in the opening quarter and led 22-10 at the end of the first break. The Lancers had 15 points off turnovers through the first 10 minutes.

In the second quarter Grace's pace of play gave Lawrence Tech fits as the Lancers scored 14 points on the fast break.

Becca Gerdt had four of them on back-to-back buckets which saw the Lancers lead grow to 30-17.

Gerdt and Houk scored in quick succession and then Ritzema hit from beyond the arc as the Lancers offense continued to hit on all cylinders.

Rylea Wetz refused to be denied in the paint and then on the next possession Grace took advantage of an offensive board as Sperry drained a trifecta to push the lead past 20 points. Houk added a pair of points from the charity stripe to push Grace's advantage to 50-27 entering halftime.

Grace shot 42 percent from the floor in the opening half while holding the Blue Devils to 30 percent. The Lancers committed five fewer turnovers than Lawrence Tech's 16.

Houk had Grace's first six points of the second half and Kate Thomas tacked on two more free throws as the Lancers lead continued to grow.

Lawrence Tech made a mini-run at the midpoint of the quarter but Grace came back with nine unanswered points of their own, capped off by a score from Braylin Terrell. The Lancers led 77-49 entering the fourth quarter.

Bekah Longenbaugh started the quarter with a shot from the corner and Houk scored a driving layup on the fast break to push the Lancers lead to 32.

At the midpoint of the quarter Ritzema scored a shot from beyond the arc through contact giving her a chance at the rare four-point play.

Grace eclipsed the century mark with a pair of free throws from Paula Fernandez and Molly Long had Grace's final points put the final tally at 112-78 in the Lancers favor.

Grace was dominant in points off of turnovers with a 43-12 advantage. The Lancers also held a 22-point advantage on points in the paint and a 28-point advantage on fast break points.

Poynter led Grace with 29 points and four steals while Houk had 20 points. Gerdt doubled with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Wetz and Terrell each grabbed eight boards.

The Lancers will be back in action on Tuesday as they take on Ohio Christian at 7 P.M.
