Grace opens Hawaii trip with win

HILO, Hawaii - The wins keep coming for Grace's men's basketball team, even in the Aloha State.

The No. 1 Lancers topped Midland 83-66, improving Grace's perfect record to 12-0.

As usual, Grace used balanced production to power the offense. All 10 players who saw the court scored a point, and seven of the Lancers hit a 3-pointer.

Gage Sefton earned scoring honors with 18 points (8 of 14 shooting), and Hunter Walston posted a double-double (12 points, 11 rebounds).

Grace's defense was locked in to begin Tuesday's contest. The Warriors were muted to just two points over the first 6:30 of the game, allowing Grace to race out to a 13-2 lead. Sefton scored six in the opening spurt, and Tyler Raasch hit a 3-pointer and two free throws.

Midland did its best to catch up, trimming a few points off Grace's lead. But the Lancers gave the Warriors fits offensively, keeping Midland from gaining momentum.

The Lancers led by double figures for the final 5:43, claiming a 42-31 lead as the game reached halftime.

Grace shot 48 percent from the floor and 57 percent on 3s (4 of 7), while holding Midland to 37 percent shooting overall.

Sefton led Grace with 10 first-half points, and Gavin Betten scored seven.

Grace continued to assert itself in the second half. A 3-pointer from Michael Wellman and a dunk from Gavin Betten propelled the Lancers ahead 59-44 with 12 minutes remaining.

Midland rattled off five quick points, but Luke Bricker answered with a deep triple.

The Warriors had one final push left, scoring six unanswered points to trim Grace's cushion down to eight with 6:53 on the clock.

Sefton helped end that run with four points in a row, and Ian Raasch and Betten also scored.

The Lancers were never threatened again, extending the lead to nearly 20 en route to the final 17-point victory.

Ian Raasch tallied 13 points and six boards, and Betten posted 11 points and three rebounds.

Tyler Raasch notched 7 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists, Grady Carpenter had five points and four assists, and Cannen Houser added 5 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists.
