FULLERTON, Calif. - Grace College's women's basketball team used an impressive offensive performance to blitz by Stanton 115-57 on Thursday afternoon.
The Lancers (8-6, 0-4 Crossroads League) scored at least 20 points in every quarter, and eclipsed the century mark for the seventh time this season.
Grace boasted a well balanced attack with six players scoring double digit points and seven players with at least three assists.
Grace's first 10 points were scored in the paint as the Lancers asserted their will down low.
Braylin Terrell and
Rylea Wetz combined for eight of Grace's first 10 points.
Emma Sperry made Grace's first outside shot and
Abbie Ritzema connected on a trifecta of her own just a minute later to push the Lancers ahead 18-7.
Grace's defense was stifling, holding Stanton scoreless over a 6:38 stretch. During that stretch the Lancers went on a 22-0 run. Grace had seven different players get on the score sheet during the explosive run.
The Elks finally broke the drought with a trio of free-throws to end the quarter and send the game to the first quarter break with Grace ahead 30-10.
Wetz had the Lancers' first six points of the second frame as Grace continued to showcase its offensive prowess.
Sperry connected on two trifectas in close order pushing the lead to 34 points. Grace was red hot from the field, shooting 63 percent in the frame.
Grace's edge grew 40 points with four minutes left in the half but the Lancers weren't done.
Paula Fernandez added a 3-point field goal and a last second second score from Terrell had Grace ahead 71-21 at the half.
Grace shot an eye-popping 58 percent from the field and connected on six 3-point shots in the first half. Wetz, Sperry, Terrell and Gerdt all had double digit points.
The Lancers forced 23 turnovers which they turned into 27 points. Grace committed just six turnovers.
The halftime intermission did little to cool Grace's offense.
Maddy Poynter and Wetz each had buckets in the opening minute of the second half and Ritzema scored again from beyond the arc.
Kate Thomas scored off of a nifty assist from
Morganne Houk nudging the lead past 60 points for the Lancers.
A pair of free throws from Gerdt to close the quarter had Grace ahead 95-30 entering the final frame.
The final four points of Wetz '29 point performance came on Grace's first two possessions of the fourth frame.
The Lancers eased up on their defensive intensity and had 12 players split playing time in the frame.
Ava Yordy added a trifecta for Grace in the final minute putting the game at its final score of 115-57 in favor of the Lancers.
Grace shot just 49 percent from the field in the game while holding Stanton to 38 percent. The Lancers dominated inside, holding a 62-14 advantage on points in the paint and 51-37 rebound advantage.
Grace scored 28 second chance points and had 46 points off of turnovers.
Wetz led all players with 29 points and 10 rebounds. She also had five assists and four steals. Terrell narrowly missed a double double with 14 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists. Sperry (14), Poynter (12), Gerdt (12) and Fernadez (11) all scored double digit points.
The Lancers will now have an extended break before returning to action on January 3 for a home match against Mount Vernon Nazarene.
