UPLAND, Ind. - Grace's baseball team started the conference slate with a doubleheader against No. 19 Taylor on Friday afternoon. The Lancers dropped both games on the day, falling 12-0 and 22-7.
The bats were held in check throughout the opener as Grace (3-6, 0-2 CL) managed just four baserunners in the game.Â
The Trojans took control of the game in the second inning, plating five runs to move ahead. The home team tacked on four more runs over the next two innings to take a 9-0 advantage.Â
Grace put runners aboard in back-to-back innings and added its lone hit in the seventh, but couldn't find the run-scoring hit.Â
The second game of the double dip started in a similar fashion with Taylor jumping ahead early. The home team did most of its damage in two separate innings, putting up two crooked innings of nine runs apiece.Â
After trailing by double digits through the first four innings, the Lancers outscored the Trojans over the final three frames 7-4.Â
Grace put together a two-hit inning in the fifth, getting a single up the middle from
Ryan Stark and a two-run blast from
Sean Gannon.
The next inning, the Lancers loaded the bases with a hit by pitch and a pair of walks. Stark provided the fireworks, taking the pitcher deep for a grand slam to plate four runs in the inning.
Grace's final run of the game came via the long ball when
Maximo De Leon belted a solo shot in the last inning.Â
The pitching staff combined for eight strikeouts. Stark finished the game 2 for 3 with 4 RBIs and 2 runs.
Grace will continue its series against Taylor with a doubleheader on March 3. The finale of the four-game set is scheduled for 12 p.m. at Winterholter Field in Upland, Ind.
