Game Recap: Baseball |

Offense keys two wins at IU Columbus

COLUMBUS, Ind. - Grace's baseball team secured two wins in non-conference play on Tuesday afternoon. Trailing 5-3 in the top of the seventh, Grace sparked a comeback with a five-run rally to win in come-from-behind fashion 8-5. In the nightcap, Grace jumped out to an early lead and rode the momentum to a 14-7 win.

Ryan Stark put Grace's first run on the board when belted a solo homerun in the second.

The lead was short lived as the Crimson Pride bats erupted for five runs in the bottom half of the same inning.

The visitors cut the deficit in half with a pair of runs in the fourth frame. Two hits and a walk loaded the bases before a fielder's choice from Maximo De Leon plated a run. The second run scored on a wild pitch, bringing home Jose Ayala.

In Grace's final at bat, things got interesting. A single, hit by pitch and a walk loaded the bases, but the breakthrough had to wait. The Crimson Pride got the next two outs, putting the Lancers down to their last out. Ayala came up clutch with a game-tying single to bring home a pair. The inning continued with another walk and a catcher's interference call allowing the go-ahead run to score. De Leon's grounder to third was misplayed, allowing two more runs to score to give Grace the 8-5 lead.

Hernandez went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the seventh to secure the complete-game victory. He collected four strikeouts in seven innings of work.

Ayala went 2 for 3 with 2 RBIs, 2 runs and a walk. Stark had 2 hits, 2 runs and a walk.

Grace's offense picked up where it left off, scoring six runs in the first inning of game two to set the tone.

Grant Hartley brought home the first run with an RBI single to chase Friesema home. Stark followed with an RBI single of his own to make it 2-0. Ayala loaded the bases with his single before Sean Gannon worked a bases loaded walk to score Hartley. A sacrifice fly from Keenan LeBlanc brought home the fourth run. John Joyce completed the six-run flurry with a double, scoring Cody and Ayala.

Each team scored three runs over the next three innings. The Lancers scored two runs in the second and another in the fourth. A defensive miscue allowed Friesema to come around to score followed by a sac fly from Ayala scored Annikan Pettit. In the fourth, Ayala had an RBI single.

Grace put together a five-run fifth to extend the lead. Two walks and a single from De Leon loaded the bases. Without a base open, Friesema garnered a walk to bring home LeBlanc. A fielder's choice scored Joyce. Another defensive miscue allowed Stark to reach safely as Friesema scored. Ayala capped off the rally with a double, bringing home two more.

The Crimson Pride nearly matched the five-run output, scoring four of their own in the bottom of the fifth to make it 14-7. Both teams were held scoreless the rest of the way, giving Grace the win.

Hartley finished 3 for 3 with an RBI and a walk. Ayala contributed 4 RBIs, 3 hits and a run. Six others recorded at least one hit.

Keegan Deaton and Sam Justice combined for nine strikeouts on the mound.

Grace will jump back into league play with its home opener on Mach 14-15 against Mount Vernon at Tom  Roy - UPI Park at 1 p.m.
