GOSHEN, Ind. - Grace College's softball team got its first taste of conference action on Tuesday afternoon against Goshen.
The Lancers (4-4, 0-2 Crossroads League) had a quiet day with bats turning in their two lowest offensive outputs of the season in the doubleheader. Grace fell in game one 7-2 and dropped game two 4-0.
Halle Nett was the first hitter for Grace in the first contest of the afternoon and earned her way on base with a leadoff walk. Nett took advantage of a passed ball and a wild pitch to move to third and Grace had runners on the corner with no outs after Bella Duran was also walked.
Daily Rickard then gave the Lancers the lead with a ground ball that brought Nett in to score.
Tia O'Connor would also single in the inning but the Maple Leafs (6-6, 2-0 CL) escaped the frame down just a single run.
The deficit was short lived for Goshen as they responded with three runs in the home half of the first inning which included a two-run home run.
In the third inning Grace threatened again as Duran worked her second walk of the inning and Rickard singled giving Grace two on with one out. O'Connor then singled through the gap which appeared to be enough to score Duran from second but a flawless relay from the Maple Leafs' defense gunned her down and at home to stall the threat.
Goshen added two more to the lead to push ahead 5-1 but in the fourth inning Grace would threaten again. A pair of singles from Nett and
Sage Ladig along with a walk from
Montana Brincks had the tying runner at the plate with two outs. Goshen again avoided disaster as the prevented Grace from breaking through as a groundout harmlessly ended the inning.
After allowing a run in the home half of the fourth inning Grace responded back in the fifth. Rickard reached safely with a lead off single and eventually was moved around the bases before ultimately being driven home thanks to a sacrifice fly from Ladig.
The Lancers were unable to build a rally in the final innings as they dropped the opener 7-2.
Nett and O'Connor both had successful showings from the plate reach safely three times in four at bats. Rickard had two hits and an RBI while striking out one and allowing just two hits in a relief appearance.
Game two saw the Maple Leafs stifle the Lancers' offense through the opening innings. Grace was without a base runner through the first two frames while Goshen jumped ahead 1-0.
In the third inning Brinks had a lead off single but the Lancers were unable to advance her leaving her stranded on first.
Goshen added two more runs to their lead and while Grace had runners in scoring position in both the fourth and fifth inning the Lancers were unable to push across a run.
The Lancers tried to muster one last rally in the sixth inning and while Duran and Rickard reached second and third respectively, they were unable to cross for a run as Grace dropped the contest 4-0.
Izzy Waddle started in the circle for the Lancers and pitched six innings with three strikeouts. Brinks was perfect from the plate in game two going 3-3.
Grace will be back in action on Friday at 3 p.m. for a road game against St. Francis.
