SPRING ARBOR, Mich. - Grace's baseball team continued league play with a doubleheader at Spring Arbor on Monday afternoon. The series finale, originally scheduled earlier this season, ended in a split with SAU taking the first game 8-0 and the Lancers picking up the nightcap 8-1.
Grace's bats were held in check throughout the opener with the first hit coming in the third inning.
SAU scored in the first inning and extended the lead with runs in the third and fourth inning to put the game out of reach.
The Lancers had two runners aboard three different times, but each time Grace threatened, the Cougars' pitching remained tough.
Steen Bellerjeau was the only Lancer with a multi-hit game, going 2 for 3.
Grant Hartley worked two walks in three at bats.
The second game of the day was a pitcher's duel through the first six innings before Grace blew the game open in the top of the seventh.
The Lancers scored runs in their first two at bats and held the 2-0 lead throughout.
Maximo De Leon opened the game with a single and later scored on
Josh Cosme's RBI single.
The next inning
Dalton Cody launched a roundtripper to right to double the early advantage.
Both teams recorded zeros on the board through the middle innings. Neither team could get much offense going as the starting pitchers were stingy on the mound.
Grace added an insurance run in the sixth with De Leon and Cosme manufacturing a run again. De Leon provided the single and Cosme hit a sacrifice fly to go up 3-0.
SAU scored their only run of the game in the bottom half of the sixth.
The Lancers blew the game open in their final at bat, scoring five runs with two outs in the inning.
Grace worked two walks to get the rally started. From there, the next five batters reached safely.
Alex Rudolph provided an RBI single which was followed by a two-RBI single from De Leon.
Matt Friesema reached via an error, allowing two runs to score. Cosme capped off the outburst with his third RBI of the game with a single up the middle.
Sam Justice pitched a gem, scattering two hits, a walk and a run over six innings of work.
Hunter Schumacher closed out the game with 1.0 inning of relief with two strikeouts.
De Leon ended the game 3 for 4 with three runs and an RBI. Cosme had two hits and three RBIs.
The Lancers will host Saint Francis on March 21-22 at Tom Roy - UPI Park for a four-game series. Both doubleheaders are scheduled for 1 p.m.
