WINONA Lake, Ind. - Grace College's softball team gave the Taylor Trojans all they could handle during Friday's doubleheader.
The games served as the first home games of the season for Lancers (4-12, 0-10 Crossroads League) who narrowly missed knocking off the Trojans in game one of the twin bill as they fell 10-9. Taylor would take game two 13-3.
The Trojans (16-6, 7-3 CL) jumped out to an early 3-2 lead with a pair of runs in the opening frame. Grace wasted little time in responding though, loading the bases with their first three batters of the home-half of the first.
Halle Nett had a lead-off double then
Bela Duran and
Sami Lemler each reached with walks.
Tia O'Connor gave Grace their first run of the game with a sacrifice fly that Nett scored on.
Daily Rickard had an RBI single to tie the game at two runs apiece.
Montana Brincks knocked in the go-ahead run with an infield hit as the Lancers held a 3-2 advantage at the end of the first.
Offense continued to flow freely from both sides as Taylor added four more runs in the second inning and in their turn at bat Grace again had the bases loaded.
With one out and the bases full, Daily Rickard put a ball in play that allowed Nett to score for the second time of the game but the Trojans avoided any further damage and maintained their 6-4 lead at the end of two.
After surrendering another run in the third inning Grace trailed 7-4 but the Lancers would come roaring back in the fourth.
Nett and Duran started the frame with a pair of walks and after a wild throw on a ground ball allowed Nett to score from second the Lancers pulled to within two runs.
O'Connor added another RBI to her total and Rickard added another run with an RBI single through the gap to tie the game at seven.
Grace recaptured the lead in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI double from
Paige McCorkle to push the Lancers ahead 8-7.
The Trojans answered back with three runs of their own to give themselves a 10-8 lead which they would carry into the final frame.
Sydney Argo and McCorkle gave the Lancers runners on the corners with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Nett had an RBI single to get Grace within a run but they were unable to push across the tying run as Taylor escaped with the 10-9 win.
Nett boasted an impressive stat line as she went a perfect 3-3 from the plate and added a pair of walks and a RBI. Duran had three walks and Rickard added three RBIs.
Game two saw the Trojans take a strangled hold on the game early. Taylor led 9-0 after two and a half innings.
Grace came back with three runs of their own in the bottom of the third as McCorkle, Duran and
Bree Gardinier all had RBIs.
Taylor added four more runs in the next inning and claimed the run rule win 13-3.
Nett had another impressive game going 2-3 from the dish. McCorkle, O'Connor and Duran also had two hits.
